My wife and I were in town for the birth of our grandson and were spending the day at a local hospital. My son and daughter had eaten food from the restaurant and suggested we order from there so we took their advice. The online ordering process went pretty well. It would help new customers if their menu was more detailed such as explaining their broasted wings and telling what is available in the side meat order. When we arrived and entered the building, I was highly impressed with the atmosphere, setup, seating arrangements and the book store set up in the front of the restaurant. Everything looked new and classy with a great color scheme. We noticed some slices of cake which looked delicious so I ordered 2 pieces of strawberry shortcake from the young man operating the cash register which left only 2 more pieces in the store. He took them out of the display/cooler and placed them on top of the counter The food we ordered was ready in just a few minutes after we arrived which I found to be very satisfying. My son took care of paying for and obtaining our food while I waited in line to pay for the cake and some of their bottled sauces. When I got to the register, one of the pieces of cake was missing. The young man spoke to another employee and learned that guy had taken the cake off the counter and sold it to another customer. This guy apologized and said he had already let the cake leave and it was nothing he could do anout it. It was about 30 minutes before closing when we got our food but another customer wanted to eat in but wasn't allowed to do so because one of the employees said it was too close to closing time to eat in. Ironically, there were about 30 people eating in at the time. We left there and went straight back to the hospital. When I opened the chicken dinner and side order of wings, I discovered they failed to give me the 2 sauces I had requsted and the food was not hot. I also discovered that one plate was missing cornbread as required, paid for and requested. We also realized we were not given any eating utensils or napkins. By the time this transpired, the restaurant was closed. Overall, the food was pretty good! We may return to try this place again, but it will not be takeout. We'll eat in so we can address any problems...
Read moreI visited Benz Boyz today to get "premium" comfort food for my husband who was home sick. I was unfortunately very disappointed with the food quality. I decided to order the 4 vegetable plate because I figured that couldn't be hard to get right. I chose the mac and cheese, which is the ultimate in comfort food, cabbage, collard greens, potato salad, corn bread and an additional side of yams. After ordering at the register, I walked down to the pick up counter and saw that they had premade plates of food prepared and sitting under a warmer uncovered. That really concerned me. I saw the server get my potato salad from a pan on the counter that was also uncovered instead of being chilled in a cooler. Also very concerning. Then it was placed in the plate with the other warm food rather than in a separate container.
Before leaving I checked my order and saw that the Mac and Cheese noodles were plain, separated with globs of greasy cheddar cheese mixed about. It was not creamy or cheesy. I thought I may have gotten a batch that was under those warmers I saw so I asked for a "fresh" one before leaving. The manager told me I can give you another side but it will look exactly the same and it did because she got it from the same pan the first serving came from. Smh!
Once I got it home I decided to taste the food with my husband, and was glad I didn't get another plate for myself. I immediately recognized the taste of Bruce's canned yams I grew up on that were whipped without a hint of seasoning and sweetened with corn syrup. The collards had more stems than leaves and were seasoned with sugar. The cabbage and potato salad were unfortunately seasoned the same way.
I am a former customer of Sidwells restaurant in Jamestown so the menu and quality is disappointedly familiar. I hoped that with a "premium" location would come "premium" food but they are serving the same mediocre food, at best. I am afraid if they don't step up their quality they will go down in history as another closed restaurant that didn't make the Greensboro grade. I wouldn't give them another $10 of my hard earned money but I wish them...
Read moreAtmosphere, outstanding. As an African American, you definitely feel the soul. The music is on point. When you first enter, there is a library which highlights black authors as well as different merchandise that can be bought that highlight black culture. Photos everywhere that also highlight black culture and different places around Greensboro such as a great painting of the drum line of A&T. Today was my second time dining and this night was by far the worst. I did not make a big deal about it but the service was definitely different. My food was very bland. There needs to be another chef asap. I know this because about a year ago I heard about how bland the food was in the elevator at my job. I rolled my eyes and ignored the comment to find out months later that the food is actually bland. It looks good, yes, but the flavor is not there. On each occasion I have felt this today but tonight just reassured my thought.
I had the salmon with yams and Mac and cheese. The salmon….looked good. It was perfectly dry and I think the glaze was similar to an Italian salad dressing. Definitely a no. The macaroni and cheese, again, looked good…but had no flavor. The yams were okay! The service wasn’t good. I think there were some teens training, but the manager was yelling at them. Loud, teaching moment? Excellent! The manager returned back to the front desk to continue the conversation that she was having with the woman that took my order. They continued having their conversation after the woman told me my told. Never letting me know my order number, looking me in my face after speaking to me, or telling me my change. Making it clear that their conversation was more important than the immensely vague and meaningless “hey, what kind I help you with?” Welcome that came after I stopped their conversation during my entering. I was so confused by our non conversation, that I did not know if she placed it for here or to go. Luckily, it was for to go. I guess she assumed. Food took about 11 minutes. I appreciate you all for feeding me though. The service just could be better is all....
