Let me tell you about A House Divided in Greensboro, North Carolina, a spot that should honestly be called A House of Flavor and Good Decisions. We came to celebrate my niece’s college graduation (go niece!), and this place ended up graduating with honors in the School of Brunch Excellence.
First, let’s talk ambiance. It’s cozy but not cramped, giving just the right amount of “we’re out” without the chaos of being out-out. The DJ was clearly playing a love letter to Generation X, spinning everything from throwback jams to those grooves that make you hum, “They don’t make music like this anymore.” The music was a tad loud, but that could be me aging into a phase where I say things like “tad loud.” Still, the vibe was right.
Because our crew was deep, they rolled out a brunch buffet. While it was solid (I went back twice for research), there were dishes coming out to other tables that made me feel like I was window shopping while already wearing shoes. One plate in particular stopped time: crispy, golden brown chicken wings stacked like royalty, flanked by creamy mac and cheese and collard greens that looked like they came straight out of Grandma’s spiritual archive.
I had to investigate. So I made a detour from my buffet bounty and ordered the wings. Lemon pepper. Now listen, I used to judge lemon pepper wings. I thought they were all hype, like crocs or NFTs. But these were fried hard just how I like them, with a crispy crunch that echoed across generations. The lemon and garlic ratio was blessed by the ancestors. Tasty? Yes. Life-changing? No.
Because the collard greens stole the show. No, really. These greens deserve their own reality series. Perfectly cut, clearly cleaned by someone who cares, and seasoned like a whisper from the ancestors. Not salty. Not spicy. Just divine. These greens were so good, I briefly considered writing them into my will.
Bonus points? The restaurant is Black-owned by a proud North Carolina A&T alum, who just happens to be my brother-in-law’s college classmate. That Aggie pride is strong, and you can feel the love and legacy in every bite.
Would I fly back to North Carolina just for those collard greens? Don’t test me. I keep my Delta app open.
If you find yourself in Greensboro and you don’t stop by A House Divided, I fear your soul may remain incomplete. Whether for a celebration or just a craving, this place deserves your time, and your taste buds...
Read moreI’m leaving this review while I’m still at the restaurant. The chicken are wings, NOT tenders as advertised on the menu for the chicken & waffles. If I would’ve known that, I would’ve gotten something else. When I asked the waitress, she immediately said we never had tenders then I asked why doesn’t the menu reflect that. She just looked at it and walked away. Came back shortly after and just said sorry. The menu is one page on paper. They only have 5 entrees and I wanted to ask if I could get the lobster & waffles for the same price but ultimately didn’t want to be difficult. Majority of the food was brought out room temperature/lukewarm. I’m with a big group about 16 people and our food was brought out at different times. That’s not a big deal but some of us finished our food before others even got theirs. They were basically forced to box their food up. This establishment is only a house with an outside that I believe was closed. Our waitress was ok, she could’ve been better, she didn’t check if we were okay once we got our food but we were a big party so I guess I can’t knock her for that? The pitchers for the drinks are carafes so it’s about 2 glasses for the $28+ they charge for one when it would/could be cheaper to get it by the glass/cup whatever they decide to give you. Since we were a big party, we should've assumed gratuity was added on but the menu nor the waitress mentioned it and we didn’t think about it as we were still trying to enjoy our friends while we’re all here for homecoming. The electronic way to pay doesn’t show an itemized receipt or even the total. Like I said, it asked for the tip and gave options with the amounts. We had to ask what the total was but it was too late to even make sure we were charged correctly. Sides were brought out before entrees. It seems like you can only smoke the hookah outside based off of the brunch menu. All of the air vents are dirty but the dj was decent. The volume fluctuated but he was the most enjoyable part. Parking is small and there’s a sign saying don’t park across the street. My boyfriend and I will personally not be...
Read moreThe House Divided Bottles and Taps Experience ( Dine-In Edition). So, on this day, I met some friends for dinner. A friend told me about a spot in Greensboro with good food and music. Now, depending on which friend tells you something, you have to be a little leary of what you could be walking into lol. I lived in Greensboro for many years and had not heard of House Divided Bottles and Taps during my time there. Upon following the GPS and seeing its location, I was apprehensive about where to park and if I should enter. They had security at the door who did pat-downs, which took me a little off-guard just keeping it real.
Once inside, I walked passed a DJ spinning some beats and went outside to the patio area. We had hookah, and after sitting down, I relaxed a little. It seemed chill, and the music was good. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Dip for a starter, which tasted okay and gave a bowling alley vibe, and their Fried Chicken White Meat with collard greens and mac and cheese. I also ordered a margarita. The server told us they were not offering some of the things on their menu because it was not in stock. I did go to the restroom during my visit, and it did appear clean. However, I wish they had bathroom facilities from the patio, which would avoid going back into the "house" to use the restroom.
Once back at the table, I received my drink in a plastic cup. When my meal came, it was in a to-go container. For me, having everything served by plastic and paper products devalues the meal's presentation. However, the prices reflect that one should receive an actual plate, fork, and glass cup. Yet, the fried chicken was good and well-seasoned. The collard greens were also good, and the mac and cheese was just okay. So, would I return? I'm not sure. I would return if a group of friends wanted to go again, but probably not of my free will. Service was okay, and I saw servers hitting the hookah and on their phones, which was slightly unprofessional. Security is probably a great thing now in our society due to violence and shootings, but I am not used to them being where I...
