Summit Cafe is tucked behind a Subway and if you blink, you'll miss it, even though it's very brightly painted in yellow and blue. Walking in, you can tell the place has been there for a minute. There are stools at the counter and five tables. It's a very tight fit, but with enough room not to feel cramped. There is a short order cook station right behind the counter, apparently with a larger kitchen behind this (there's a wall) with a small pass-through window for orders the grill can't handle. The bathrooms are TINY! Do not think about getting a wheelchair to the bathrooms, much less IN them. They were, however, very clean and smelled good. You will also find a significant lean to Black empowerment and African American Gospel music for the atmosphere. Service left a lot to be desired... They were short staffed, seemed to have a new line cook and were steady busy. One server seemed to be trying to handle the FOH - take phone orders, take table orders, ring out customers, serve food, refill drinks, etc., while the cook was trying desperately to keep up with all the orders while a third woman was running between these two trying to back each of them up. They desperately need more help. One of our orders came out five minutes before the other. We were a table of two. Now let me tell you about the food... OMG! was it ever good! Even though there are NO PRICES ON THE MENU, we ordered with abandon. Their menu has both breakfast and lunch items that can all be ordered from 7am to 2pm Monday through Saturday. Some of their offerings include: shrimp and grits, fried whiting, corned beef hash, salmon patties, liver mush, chicken fingers and omelettes. Any of their menu items can be combined in some way to make you happy. I was thrilled to find a place where I could order lunch at 9:00am!! I ordered the fried salmon patties (or I could have gotten them grilled) and fries, which came with toast. They were some of the BEST salmon patties ever! Full of flavor and fried with a nice crust. My friend ordered the liver mush with eggs, grits and toast. There was a lot of food and the liver mush was fried perfectly! It was all so very good. And I will mention this - I drink unsweetened tea and a lot of places just can't get that right, but the tea here was delicious! Soft drinks come in a can and they make their own coffee, Folgers, out of a coffee canister like you would at home. Our meal, without tip, was $31 for two plates. It's a little pricey, but the portion sizes and the quality of the food are worth it. We'll be back for sure because I want to get their corned beef hash and eggs. And as always, we try to...
Read moreI went to Summit Cafe for the first time today and wow! I was blown away by the atmosphere, first of all. It has a real home-like feel. The pictures on the wall were telling the history of the city. The music was bumping. It was like having breakfast at the family reunion with family members you haven't met yet. The diners of old. The cook was doing his thing cooking up all kinds of meals from omelets to french toast, shrimp & grits, I saw potatoes being worked on and of course, my favorite, fish and grits. My order was to go and I was regretting it because I wanted to stay in the atmosphere but had to get to work. When I tried the food, I was like, WHAT?! Man the fish ws sooo flavorful! And the portion was huge. I couldn't finish it. (Now I have lunch too! If you're ever around summit avenue and want that hometown diner atmosphere whith some of the best people in Greensboro, stop by...
