On Friday night, I treated my wife to an evening at TOKYO Japanese Restaurant, enticed by a promising menu. However, the experience was marred by several disappointments. With only two servers on duty that night, the bustling atmosphere resulted in a 15-minute wait before we could place our order. Our female Japanese server, though friendly, was remarkably loud, making our entire order audible to the entire restaurant, creating an unexpectedly awkward moment. When our food arrived, the letdown continued. My miso soup tasted akin to a generic chicken broth found in supermarkets, and it arrived cold, rendering it undrinkable. I ordered a plate featuring steak, shrimp, and fried rice, but alas, my anticipation was met with cold, unappetizing fare. The rice, while slightly warm, emitted a stale odor reminiscent of three-day-old Chinese rice with an unpleasant oiliness. For a $20 dish, I anticipated freshness and warmth, but unfortunately, this was not the case. Faced with the unappealing meal, I debated addressing the issue with our server. Eventually, I inquired if the food was meant to be served cold. She offered to reheat it, but wary of potential kitchen mishaps, I declined and requested the bill. I prefer not to send food back to the kitchen when trust in the culinary preparation is in question. Regrettably, the overall experience was subpar, and I have no intention of returning to TOKYO Japanese Restaurant. I cannot recommend it to others based on the combination of service hiccups and the disappointing quality of the...
Read moreFood is good but service is inconsistent at best and not worth the trouble. Last time we went in for dining room service the wait was so long for someone to even come take drink order (meanwhile other tables were sat, had drinks ordered and delivered, and ordered meals while our table of 2 was still waiting) and even using their “doorbell” nobody came so we got up and left. After that we said we’d do take out only but even that has declined in service. Started with small issues like soup given instead of salad, wrong sushi rolls, etc but tonight we arrived to pick up our order and they had given it to someone else and told us to wait 20 minutes in our car while they remade it. There was a line waiting to pickup orders so rather than stay and hold up the line we left and I called later to complain to the manager, who hung up on me. My recommendation to customers: There are other places with food just as good and better service, such as Wasabi 88, or try this place when you have plenty of time to kill (or just get it delivered). My recommendation to management: If you gave our food to another customer, we could have been offered their order instead of having to wait, or been given an appetizer or some kind of discount for our inconvenience of having to wait. Even better, just get customer names when ordering takeout so that you don’t have mistakes like this again. Hope you are able to improve and make it through these difficult times, but we will not be returning for takeout...
Read moreI've eaten at every Japanese restaurant in Greenville (Shogun, Wasabi 88, Osaka, Japan Inn, etc) and this is leagues above. For one, it's the only places that serves actually fresh tuna. You can tell how fresh tuna is in other places if it tastes or smells "fishy" (almost every other place), or if it's masked with tons of tempura crumbs -- I'm looking at you, Japan Inn. Tokyo is kind of the champion of raw fish despite being an hour and a half inland.
The service is also excellent. I come here so often that they've memorized my order and treat me like family. They're just that kind of way. If you want recommendations on what to get, try the tuna kabarcho, tuna tataki (can you tell I like tuna?), the south cajun appetizer (I forget what it's called, but it's good), the kimchi soup, and any of the rolls. Can't really go wrong here.
I will say this - if I want good BEEF tataki, go to Shogun instead. Would never order anything raw fish from there, though; only get cooked rolls. If you want anything raw, go Tokyo all the way. Want to eat your bodyweight in sushi and hate yourself, go...
