We have been to this place 3 times and I will let you make your own determination based on my review. The first time, I ordered dinner take out and told them to make the food medium spicy. When i picked it up, the dish had spicy written on it and the food was fire spicy. I wasn't thrilled but we ate it and it was flaverful and tasty so I wanted to give it another try. I did tell them in advance that I dont want any sweetner added to my food and would like it authentic style. They told me that would be fine but I still tasted sweetened food in between the spices. The second time, I ordered chicken curry and saag-paneer both medium spicy. both delicious and absolutely amazing. i was excited as not many good indian places outside of NYC, Queens and LI. Then we went for lunch special takeout. Great value and generous portions. Again asked them not to sweeten our food and was told it wont be sweet. My chiken curry was very good, flavorful and perfect. My wife ordered Lamb vindaloo which was spicy and you could taste the sugar alongside the spicy. Many indian restaurants if not most do this to mask the spices and make it for the American Palette. I would be ok if they told us that the food will be sweetened in which case my wife would order something different. In this case, the food was inedible as it was so sweet. We are of Indian heritage, know our Indian food and have had it all over the world. If you are okay with this style cooking, the food is delicious and this place is for you. If you prefer traditional indian cooking where the food isnt sugared up to mask the spices, some of you will know what I'm saying, then this place isn't for you. All in all, i'm giving it an okay rating. We did call and let the restaurant know our feelings but felt that it mostly fell on deaf ears and our feedback wasn't valued. However, this place has possibilities and their Chicken Curry is exceptional as was the...
Read moreFirst Indian food I have had in my half century of existence that had no spices. For no spices it got 5 stars. It's well seasoned just no spices. The "roti" (aka chaapati) to this day in all western countries (all of north America and western Europe) are usually some form of pita bread (usually white flour sometimes mix white and whole wheat). They are not real (east Indian) wheat rotis (aka chapati). If you come to my family's house we will serve you real chaapati. I can make them too, though, they come out too crunchy. Rotis/chaapati are the toughest to learn (especially for guys), I have been trying for 25 years. Their rice etc is good then again it's just rice. Their naan was so so. This isn't like a north indian pit-oven naan.
We ate inside and that part kind of sucked, it's kind of made for take out, just like some of those take out Chinese places. We enjoyed it cause it wasn't crowded. This place for it's food is way over priced. I guess for old Greenwich I guess that what happens here. This place should have outdoor seating, it's claustrophobic inside and very narrow , and luckily they have "windows"... And they don't open.
If this place was located near curry in a hurry area of Lexington Ave , Manhattan.... Not sure if it would last. I'm happy old Greenwich has a "dhaba" (though its not really north indian or south Indian ... Wouldn't be surprised if it was Goa or Kerala type mixed with...
Read moreFood was Ok. Prices were slightly lower than I expected - but there are 2 reasons for that. 1.) The portion sizes are very small, and it's especially apparent in the takeout where the all of the containers are only 70-80% full. For example, I have never gotten takeout rice that's not packed in to the brim. Here there was 3/4 of an inch of space. 2nd reason - the food just isn't the best despite the 4+ star rating this place currently has. Samosas were clearly not the freshest (they weren't flaky), but the quality issue extends to their curries too. Not a ton of flavor, and the chicken isn't very well marinated. There are an abundance of Indian restaurants in the area and you're better off going with one of them even if each dish is a dollar...
