I will preface this low review by stating that my wife and I have eaten at The British Chip Shop on multiple occasions during the previous and current ownership. We have always felt it has been a little expensive, but we have had consistently great food and justified the extra expense by saying we were happy to support a local business rather than a chain restaurant. Today my wife was having family over and wanted to get some scones to serve. While there are a multitude of bakeries to choose from in the area, we again thought it would be nice to patronize The British Chip Shop and help support them during the financial hardship that many restaurants are feeling during Covid-19. My wife called a day or two in advance to ask if they had plain scones and to figure out whether or not we would need to order them ahead of time, etc. We were told we could come in at any time and they would have them fresh and ready. So I went to pick them up about 30-45 minutes after they opened for the day. When I got there I was told they did not have a single plain scone. When I asked if they had sold out of them that quickly the server was not clear and made it sound like they had not had any made for the day at all. After calling my wife to relay the bad news, we decided to get a couple other flavors of scones instead rather than not have them at all. When the server took my order she went to the back to get them but quickly returned and sat a customer who had walked in. She repeatedly went to the back and then came back out to attend to other customers in the restaurant 2 more times. Finally she went to the back and came out with a bag with my order. I paid and made my way back home. When I went to take them out of the bag that had been stapled shut (which in hindsight seems like she was trying to hide the fact they were not fresh) I found that I had bought 5 completely frozen scones. At no point were we told that they were not freshly baked and that we would have to reheat them. On top of that they were $4.25 each. If I wanted to look for frozen baked items I would have stopped in the freezer section of Shop Rite and spent a fraction of the cost. I only wish that they had been honest with us from the start about their inventory and the fact that they were frozen and not fresh. I could have then called another bakery and not have had such a poor experience with one of my favorite local restaurants. Sadly, I am not sure that we will be returning anytime soon after...

The service was slow. It took around ten minutes to get seated in a virtually empty restaurant with us as the only people in line.
The food took almost 40 minutes to reach us meaning we had to rush our meal to avoid getting a ticket.
The prices are not as advertised on Google. It might have been a 10-20 dollar place, once long ago in the distant past, but the prices have increased far past that and now rest comfortably in the 20-30 range, something if I'd have seen reflected in the aggregate I'd have never even bothered.
And speaking of the food, it was mediocre and the portions were not great. Their large fish and chips had two small to moderately sized fish fillets, one of which was oddly soggy, and a middling bed of limp fries. I left hungry and disappointed while my friend was only able to eat half her meal because we didn't have time to sit back and enjoy our meals, all for the low, low price of 22 dollars plus tax and tip.
As for atmosphere, the table was wobbly and the music was a generic and forgettable - I think it was some kind of British punk-pop (like I said, forgettable) being played just loud enough to be mildly intrusive.
Next time, I'll just go to Arthur Treacher's. Foods better, service is faster, they don't over charge you, doesn't have the mediocre music grinding away in the background, and...
Read moreI had a brunch for my brother's 40th birthday on 08/16/15 let me just start off by saying this that our waitress Kristen was GREAT very attentive to the huge party that we had. I didn't enjoy my breakfast I had the Knight's of Windsor was way too sweet the chocolate and Berry sauce was way too much for the French Toast it was an OVERLOAD! Now here's what made the restaurant get a one star from me the manager and the owner who have no customer service skills. I received my bill at the end of our brunch and noticed that I had been charged an add'l fee just have them cut my brother's birthday cake and were not talking $5 or $10 dollars let's try $35 to cut our cake. No one even informed me that I would be charged to have them cut my brother's birthday cake. Then I was told I would be charged a $20/pp for the brunch that included a beverage and pastries then I was charged an add'l fee of $25 for pastries. That again no one told me that I would be charged for. I will NEVER be back to The British Chip Shop. It's a shame because even though I didn't enjoy my meal I was going to returned to try something else because of the level of service we received from Kristen she really made up for the SURPRISE bill I received. Thank...
