Let me start by saying any establishment that stays open serving food till 11 pm on a week day in Hagerstown has my respect and admiration.
Now, pulling up to Casa Juarez just before 9 pm had me more than a little bewildered. On the outskirts of downtown not far from the fair grounds, you may find what is seemingly a 2 story house with christmas lights on in mid-May. Alas, the restraint sign gives the constructs true nature.
Walking in a surprisingly large interior meets you with 2 story dining, including a second story outdoor patio.
Shortly after ordering soft drinks and pupusas, I begin catching glimpses of other guest orders.
Colorful cocktails and tasty looking tacos pass me by. Leaveing me hopeful for what some of the higher end menu items have to offer. Some 20 to 30 minutes later, this hope is escalated by truly great pupusas, albeit slight downtrodden at the weight time.
When my meat lovers platter finally arrives short of the advertised jalapeño and cheese, I find myself in further dismay at the lack of sauce. This is a fajita style dish served with succulent sizzle that pictures that can not personify. Still, the normally welcome char in the chicken, steak, pork chop, and chorizo is choked down in the absence of the standard medley of sauces found at any other establishment.
My girlfriend and I opted to leave meet on the table rather than bring home a togo box for the first time in years.
In summary, the true beauty and value of Casa Juarez is that it offers a unique late night experience with drinks and some of the cheaper menu items (2 for 6 tacos & 2 for 5.50 pupusas). A younger me would have jumped at that value, and if the right crowd finds its way to Casa Juarez door step It may find...
Read moreMy husband and I decided to try this place out for dinner last night. Boy, were we disappointed. When we arrived, there were very few people in the restaurant. The 2 groups that were there were leaving. We were seated immediately; however, it went downhill from there. We waited for almost 10 minutes to get chips and salsa. The chips were mediocre at best. The salsa was tasteless. It took about another 10 minutes for a server to come to our table. We placed our drink order and our food order at the same time. It took another 15 minutes to get our drinks and my husband ordered water with lemon and it came with a very small slice of lime. He had to ask again for lemon. We then sat another 20 minutes waiting for our food. My husband had ordered a salad which he never received. Then the server came with food that wasn't ours. She then came back a little later with our orders. I ordered the chimichanga platter. The Chimi was supposed to be deep fried, however it was like mush. I didn't know there would be big pieces of peppers and onions inside. The chicken was okay at best. There was little sour cream, the rice was plain. My husband ordered a fajita steak burrito, which again had big pieces of peppers and onions. There was no sauce or flavor to the burrito. The menu lacked explanation of what each dish contained. When the server brought our check, they only charged us for my meal and drink, apologized for the slow service and mix up on the order. I understand they were trying to make things right, however overall, the experience was horrible, and the food was lacking in taste and presence. We will definitely not be coming back...
Read moreWe just left this newer addition to Hagerstown restaurants. Casa Juarez opened about 3 months ago and we found time tonight to get there for dinner, and highly recommend it.
I read some of the reviews here, and looked at pictures of menu items before going. One thing stood out to me about the pictures, and that was that the food looked well placed and organized on the plate. Maybe some donât care whether this is the case when theyâre out dining, particularly for a Mexican styled restaurant but I always do feel better about my food if it looks good on the plate when itâs served.
When our meals arrived the plated food looked like the pictures. No disappointing âFalling Downâ experience here!! Everything lived up to the very high standards of presentation that you see in the menu photos.
I had the enchiladas and my partner had the chimichanga. Sides were rice and beans. 5 stars for all of these.
Complimentary chips and a unique style of salsa preceded our dinners.
EVERYTHING felt homemade. EVERYTHING.
Weâre going back soon, and taking others with us. This place is a unique gem. Itâs easy to access and park, and they seem genuinely dedicated to deliciousness and friendly quality service. Keep an eye out for upcoming nightly specials as the weather warms (itâs early February as I write this).
Give Casa Juarez a try very soon, you wonât...
