Latest review: This is in response to the owner who is telling me to "lighten up" because saying women tip less than men is "just a joke", the restaurant owner is pranking on the customer.
Sexist comments are NEVER funny to the afflicted. (It would be much funnier if the joke was on you. I am all for that and am ready for a hearty laughter!) The food NEVER tastes good to the berated customer (This is a course 101 in restaurant management). I took off one star for telling me that the owner is righter than the customer. Please refer to ALL the successful businesses; owner is always right and customers should lighten up and see their point of view is UNPRECEDENTED in a successful ownership! Good luck! First Review: It is just a pleasure to come here. If you order coffee, they will routinely whip the milk for you! This is a $2 coffee! They will heat the muffin for you which is delicious! They also have fresh bread you can buy. I love having breakfast and lunch here. Parking is easy too! I am so glad I do not have to go to New Haven to find such a nice cafe! This is a bakery/ lunch place I speak fondly of and frequent with my friends
I took off three stars from my recent visit to the store. At the window was a box for a tip with a sign, "women tip less than men" and the tip box was divided into women and men. I do not have information on the intent of the owner except for some guesses as to how this box actualized. For all I know, it is done in jest for fun. However, it feels wrong to me at several levels. First of all, customers are not provided with Facts that women indeed tip less and what matrix B and C used to come up with this conclusion. If it is not true, Bread and Chocolate is spreading false negative information about half the population! Secondly, it is a generalization and I as a very generous tipper am offended. Third, tips are voluntary and B and C seem to demand it in a competitive fashion, shaming women in the process. I would add, on average women MAKE less than men (this is a proven fact) and it would follow that if woman tipped the same amount as men, they would be paying a higher percentage of their income. There is enough guilt women are subjected to. I came here for warmth and sweet. My chocolate croissant did not taste nearly as good as before. Please be so kind as to...

I ordered the chicken portabello and veggie panini to go. It came to a little under 7.00 and the woman (who I think was the owner) said I needed to pay with cash under 10.00 I fumbled around looking for something to add on and then she became impatient and said fine this time but next time bring cash. I apologized and stated it was my first time and I didn’t live in the area. She sighed heavily in my general direction. She engaged in a friendly manner with other customers who seemed to be regulars.
I opened my sandwich in the car and it was not what I ordered, I think in trying to rush people through the door she misheard me and gave a grilled cheese with tomato. Now the grilled cheese was really good, but not what I wanted or ordered. The sandwich came with a bag of chips, it was one of those tiny sampler bags with 5-6 chips.
All in all it seems like local customers like the place, but unfortunately I didn’t have a great visit, I walked away feeling frustrated and...
Read moreThe breads are delicious and freshly baked daily! Their breakfast options, like omelettes, French Toast, eggs, etc. are made fresh to order. They also have a wide variety of pastries and sweets! Their breads and pies and other products are available at so many other locations throughout Greater New Haven, making their reach far greater than just the Hamden community.
They also provide their breads to their very own family run deli, The Corner Deli, also located here in Hamden. Alejandra now runs this bakery with her daughter, while her husband Jaime runs the The Corner Deli, with their other daughter. Everything is from scratch, they don’t buy anything pre-made, at either location. They have now been successfully in business for 15 years, and their not going anywhere. Their daughters are likely to take over both businesses eventually, and these staples within the Hamden community, and beyond, will remain in the family for...
