This family relocated from "across the pond" -- (Lake Manchac and Lake Ponchatrain) to Hammond, LA. after devastating loss from Hurricane Katrina years ago. Week to week they held on. I know because I visited at least bi-monthly, sometimes finding them closed as they struggled to rebuild home and business. I was doing the same, but never shared. I do not know them personally and they would not know who I am. They earned this review.
Conveniently located RIGHT off I-55 in Hammond (2 red lights, lol)... I pass through several towns and skip other seafood markets along the way still, to do business there because quality and personal service is who they are at B&J. Everything is in stock despite their booming business. Open Tues.-Sunday (closed Mondays). Many fresh seafood/fish offerings!! Also fresh-frozen local and area products. Everything that is Louisiana- they have it! CALL Ahead for take-out with a fresh cooked menu--boiled seafood, homemade gumbo, potato salad, poboys and fried plates! You may dine in.. tables available, but the staff takes care of the market as well.. they stay so busy! Anything you need for complete seafood cooking at home they sell it!! If you're from out of town and want to get set-up for cooking they sell everything literally including "the t-shirt". And they share all the "know-how". I get advice from the ladies on tweeking a recipe with their shelf-starters, or if I'm cooking from scratch. Amounts, weights, portions, planning for each guest. They're so knowledgeable and have everything thing you need right there! And, do NOT pass up the fresh New Orleans Liedenheimer French bread!!! 1 loaf is not enough! Delivered there throughout the week. Pre-packaged daily- homemade gumbo, potato salad, and sometimes stuffed crab may be snagged if you get there from 11:30-3pm usually Tues. through Friday. These pre-packaged delicacies are limited and sell out fast!!! (should I have shared this secret?!?!). The market is open into the evening for everything else. Fair prices, honest scale/weight, fast, friendly, clean, and efficient!! They treat everyone just the same- I always leave with a smile! Wish I could give...
Read morePretty disappointed. All our waitresses fault. So I'm from Kentucky, saw the great reviews and decided to give it a try. I came in around 10am and asked for frozen crawfish tails. The woman I spoke to said they didn't have them and she was quickly corrected by someone at the counter that they indeed did have them. I also needed to get a roast beef po boy to go. They said they would have them at 11 am. I returned at 1230. Brought the family in and emwe sat down, our waitress came over. She proceeded to tell me she had been there 20 years and she was the best waitress they had while at the same time complaing about that they only gave her two tables to wait, one was the one next to the pole no one wanted to sit at and the other was the to go table. While taking our order she explained she didn't need to write it down, since she was really good. Well, guess what. 2 out of our 4 orders were wrong. My wife asked for her sandwich to be not dressed, it came dressed. I ordered half an oyster and half crawfish PO boy. I got shrimp instead of crawfish. We didn't see her for quite some time so I asked the woman who delivered our food about the to go roast beef po boy. She took our order no problem. Our waitress finally showed up, and I informed her that I had placed the to go order. She got irate and explained to me that they didn't know anything about ordering and that I should have got with her to do it. She then said she would go fix it. We ate, got our to go order and left. Well, got home to Kentucky today, and low and behold, she packed no bread with my roast beef po boy. For the "best waitress" there, she sure wasn't very good. Be warned if you get "the best waitress they have" double check...
Read moreBeen going to BJ's since it opened has been my family's exclusive place for seafood both fresh and the restaurant. I thought we had a good relationship with the staff and owners My wife and on of our usual shopping trips We couldn't find a pint of oysters in the case with the ice Having been in seafood industry for over 30 years, that is the correct way to handle seafood which is one of the most perishable food products. The lady went to the back of the case from their side and found a pint. The next day when we opened the jar the oysters and their liquid was yellow My wife tasted one and spit it out. On one of my next trips I asked to s p eak to the owner to let them know that we had gotten a spoiled pint of oysters. Looking for nothing more than them know. I was not prepared for the defensive and very unfriendly reaction The worker came and stand next to the owner with this deadpan stare and repeatedly saying she checks that everyday She also kept saying we should have called or brought it back.I f anyone has ever tried to call there it next to impossible to get through I wasn't going to make a special trip to bring back $14 Jar of oysters. As I said I was quite shocked by the reaction, attitudes and the denial that they could never sell a...
