Famous Hot Weiner North Inc — Restaurant in Hanover

We have been coming here for close to 25 years. Back when we first started, it was not unusual for having a wait of 15 minutes for a table or booth on a Saturday night. More recently, there is usually no wait.

On Saturday, January 27, 2024 it was reminiscent of the old days where it was busy at 6 pm. We got a booth within a few minutes. An alarm should have gone off right away when the server came over and swept under the table. No experienced server usually does that as the discarded fries and trash remain throughout the day. She did explain that this was her 3rd day.

We placed our order which included several items to go and we asked that they be put in towards the end of the meal. As she was taking the order it was apparent that she was struggling and didn't know the menu. Shortly after placing the order, two other servers came over to ask about our to-go order (a hot dog and milkshake). Sure enough the milkshake appeared in a few minutes before any food was delivered.

We did notice our server seemingly lost behind the counter as we waited for our food. About 20 minutes went by when she finally brought over the food, all of it packaged to go. We told her that only the hot dog was to go. A few minutes later the hot dog to-go appeared but not the other food. Then the remaining food was brought by a different server but most of it was cold and one sandwich was incorrect.

Sadly, this server was set to fail by management. She was not trained properly and thoroughly on their order entry system or the menu. Being that she was new, she should have been shadowed by a mentor during the busy period or put on the drive through window where she would have only had to wait on one customer at a time. Management was aware of the issue with our order but never left the counter to offer any apology or explanation. The other servers definitely have negative attitudes and are argumentative.

This location has gone downhill for years. Read the other reviews. Poor food quality and service is generally a direct reflection on poor management oversight. It is no longer a bargain either. Their "special", two sandwiches and fries are about $13. Now you do get a mound of fries but the hot dogs and burgers are nothing special and often the rolls are not the freshest and overshadow and swallow the meat. Actually folks do not let the looks of the food or the prices trick you into thinking their food is in comparison to other hot dog shops. First their food has changed. They completely started serving a different hot dog about 10 years ago. The fries our fine with ketchup, nothing special. The hot dog if you just taste the meat is very light in flavor. The onions have a nasty medicinal taste that everyone I have brought there points out first. The chili is also almost flavorless. The hamburger meat is absolutely repulsive. It tastes like I would imagine dog food must. The grilled cheese if good enough for the price. I am from Maryland and still do go there and to The Texas Lunch occasionally and I do eat the dogs and fries but really they are not too good. But with a bunch of mustard and ketchup I eat them. Maybe the folks who grew up just got used to that food and the original is a cool place and so is the northern one (not the newer chains.) I am no hater because I will tell you that on a trip to New York we made sure to try Yocco’s and Pott’s. We tried almost everything on the menu at both places. All of Yocco’s is pretty good but not super good but holy cow Pott’s is stunningly delicious. Their hot dogs are so good all the different ways they top them are all so amazing. The garbage dog is the best I think it has all this stuff on them like a Chicago dog. The meat in the hot dogs is perfect. I think Yocco’s meat is good too. Oh and Yocco’s chili sauce...

I am rating this strictly for take out Only! Do Not Do Not order take out. This was the third time what I'm about to tell you this has happened. I drove to restaurant and called order I. Was told it would be 10 minutes. I waited exactly 10 minutes and went to drive up window and got the food. I ordered the hamburger and hotdog and fry special. As it turns s out it wasn't so special. The hamburger and hotdog sandwich was cold and the fries 🍟 for the Third time in a row THE FRIES WERE SOGGY !!.....yuck. The first time I called and complained and not even an acknowledgment was given. The second time I order the fries 🍟 well done and they were Soggy. I took them back and had them make it right without an apology given. After the third time I decided to write this review. I started going here in 1978 where I met the boys mom. So I take this review seriously. Like I said at the beginning of review this rating is for Take Out Only. My rating for inside dining will be the opposite of this. Bottom line I would suggest going inside of possible to eat and Do Not order to go or drive thru. I believe it's the way they are packaged that makes everything Soggy and cold so quick.
