(Last visited 7/29/2021.) As a very popular and local favorite I've been to this place a couple of times, but have never gotten around to doing an actual Yelp review! Shame on me. Well, now it's time! Atmosphere/Appearance: Set right downtown Hartford on Asylum Street is this gem. It's located underneath the awesome Pig's Eye Pub and has a very casual, yet, upscale feel to it. There's red everywhere, dark woods, high ceilings, great music and a lot of room. There's like 3 separate dining areas and even a place for live music. I haven't seen a show here in quite a while, but it's such a good time when they get a good jazz band in here. Service: Daria took good care of us! She was fast and made sure that we had everything that we needed. Food: So on this visit I got to try out their wings and their blackened catfish. Let's discuss the wings! The Buffalo flavor was so Heavenly. They tasted like they were smoked then fried. They were so tender, juicy and with great flavor. I could've totally grabbed some of the other flavors and made a meal out of it. Boom. For my entrée I went for the Blackened Catfish and this is a dish I normally wouldn't go for. I've been trying to expand my horizons and eat OTHER things aside from wings all the time. Lol. This catfish was delicious. It was nicely salted, with incredibly rich, deep flavor that just touched my soul. It was amazing. With the catfish comes cheesy grits & garlicky green beans. Just the best freaking side-dishes to complement the main. Value: So for $12.95 you get 8 wings and I think that's fairly decent. They're of good size, incredibly flavor and the quality is just next level. My catfish dinner was $17.95 and that's very good in my opinion. It's a filling dinner with great flavors and I mean, what more could you want?! In conclusion, this place is awesome and there's a reason it's been around for so many years. Check this place out if you're in the area! There's so much that they have to offer. If you made it this far in the review, I appreciate you reading. Please do me a favor and head on over to "The Hungry Road" on YouTube and subscribe! My channel features a lot of food, car and exclusive shoe related content!

I wandered in yesterday looking for a place to get something to eat and get out of the gloomy cold weather. Southern food sounded like it would warm up my spirit, if nothing else would work. I sat down in the main dining room because it appeared that they'd have some live music. I assumed it would be the blues, but I was wrong. Oh well. The music was alright, and the crowd was appreciative. The room was warm and festive, with folk art on the walls and lots of candle light. I ordered the Maple Bourbon Old Fashioned. I don't like maple, so not sure why I made this choice, except that bourbon old fashioned is my usual drink. It definitely had a strong maple flavor, so if that is your thing, you'd probably enjoy this drink. I also ordered the shrimp and grits and the collard greens. The food was heavenly. The grits were thick and creamy with bits of crispy and smoky andouille. The shrimp was perfect. The greens were perfect, soft enough and very flavorful. If I was to return, I don't think I'd even look at the menu. I would just order this again. The portions were big enough to share.

I know Black- Eyed Sally's has been here for as long as I can remember. I have heard so many wonderful things about this place. Everyone seems to like it. Well this is my second time here. My second time in more than 10 years. But I figure maybe I wasn't having a good day my first time, so let's give it a go. Well maybe I just don't understand what it is they do? For southern cooking i don't find it to be all that. Now i admit it's been a couple weeks since I've had this, so not every detail is fresh in my head, but i do know I walked away with the same unfulfilled feeling. So the pulled pork sandwich was a pulled pork I could have had just about anywhere, nothing telling me, oh i'm at Black- Eyed Sally's! Now while I didn't have the mac n cheese i'm told it was excellent. All the southern flavors you'd expect. Desert I felt was even more disappointing. The rhubarb pie seemed store bought, maybe worse a Sisco product? While I have yet to try to find where they get their food this is simply my feeling. Again nothing that makes it stand out to me. As for service I certainly cannot complain. To be honest I felt I was a bit of a pain making them come back more than several times while I pained over the menu! It will be some time before I ever get back here. Sorry

Whenever my family didn't want to cook for Thanksgiving...we've thoroughly enjoyed the catered meal in the past. While waiting for my spouse to come in from Boston, we settled here for dinner with friends. I was so disappointed by the food. I ordered the gumbo, it had no flavor. It seemed as though the flavors didnt have time to marry. ( I packed the remainder..and tried it again the next day...it tasted completely different the next day...it actually tasted like something) I also ordered a side of mac and cheese, a 3 year old would have been satisfied with the Kraft box like flavor. Our waitress was Shay or Shy, she was great! She seemed shy, I know it can be hard to feel comfortable with new faces daily. You are amazing, be sure of who you are as a person...you are beautiful...and watch the tips come in beyond what you've been accustomed to. Ps. Hire a cook with some soul in their heart...I believe you can taste if the food was made with love and it wasn't there that evening. I agree with the other review that stated that it wasn't as flavorful as people are stating...

We took the Fastrack bus line from New Britain to go here to see "Jake Kulak and the Lowdown". They had a small cover charge, but the band was awesome and so it was well worth it. As a matter-of-fact, I had gone here before to see another great young local band, "The New Amsterdam Nobles". They put on a great show and the crowd was really into it. I don't know who books the live acts here, but they know good music. The food and drinks were all good and the prices were reasonable. I'd recommend trying the ribs or perhaps the wings. The waitstaff was attentive and kept up nicely with demand. This is a nice place to go for a meal or just drinks... Update(9/2/2023): We went here tonight to watch a band called Portrait Party. They were good, playing some original music while mixing in some classics including some requests. I tried the Harlem Chicken & Waffles as well as the Creole Deviled Eggs, and the Sweet Potato Fries… All good stuff!

I've never been to this establishment. Made online reservations for 5 pm. on a Saturday night. Walked in at 4:56pm and was told we wouldn't be helped until the place opened at 5 pm. Our online reservations told us to arrive 30 minutes early to insure our spot. If you walked in and wanted to go to the bar, they helped you immediately. Ordered the beef brisket platter-dry meat. Cole slaw, grits and cornbread accompanied - all were tasteless. My guest ordered (waitress recommended) the pulled pork platter as it was juicer. Nope, it wasn't. Swapped out coleslaw for sweet potato fries at 1.00 more The other side was beans and rice, which had no flavor. We ordered the fried pickles. Thankfully, we did as that was the best item ordered and saved us from starving. Will not be back again. That was a 55.00 dinner (without tip) that we did not take home the leftovers. It was flavorless and bland.
