Traveled to Kona, HI from the SF Bay Area, CA with my family. It was our last dinner before flying home and I wanted something good and local. We came in around 5:30PM on a Wed (Memorial Day week). There was no line but a few folks were waiting for their to go order (at the time of writing this, only To Go orders being taken).
I ordered the two plate mix of the Furikake Garlic Chicken and the Adobo Pork Belly with Adobo Fried Rice. We also got the Kona Coffee Mud Pie to share. We took the food back to our hotel about 8 minutes away.
So we're a Filipino family and the food was so da bomb!! my first bite was the Furikake chicken, oh man, it was moist in the inside and crispy on the outside. The seasoning and sauce was bomb. The Adobo pork belly - first bite was bomb!! Some restaurants overcook the pork belly but this was done perfectly. Adobo fried rice - oh yes, so good!
The Kona Coffee Mud Pie was sooo good too! It was more than enough for three adults and one toddler. The pie part was like a coffee cake pie.
My hard to impress sister enjoyed the food and my Filipino mom was very happy! I couldn't eat my whole plate so I saved it for breakfast and it still tasted good!
During our stay on the big island we went to a few highly rated restaurants with 1000+ reviews, but Broke Da Mouth Grindz was the best food by far! We'll definitely come back to...
Read moreWe came here for lunch during our current trip to the big island. Wife found this place based on Yelp reviews, but to be honest, Yelp reviews for Waikoloa restaurants have been very misleading so far. This one was not in Waikoloa and over a thousand reviews, so we felt a little more confident. The restaurant is a bit out off the beaten path inside a strip mall, and the restaurant is pretty small inside. However as soon as you walk in you can smell the delicious aroma of garlic chicken, or as they can it furikake chicken, which is their specialty. We ordered the local grindz furikake chicken and the bento plate, with a side order of garlic fries. The bento plate came with one piece of fried chicken and one piece of rib, which was the best part of the entire meal. It was tender and full of flavor, and my 9 year old loved it and ate most of it. I got the adobo rice with my bento and it was pretty good. The signature chicken was juicy and well seasoned, a bit sweet but not overly so like other Hawaiian restaurants. The garlic fries were good and crispy, very generous portion. The service was friendly and attentive, and food came out relatively quickly even though it was busy. Overall the best meal we've had on this current trip. We will definitely be back next time we come to...
Read moreSo my hubby really wanted to try this place and I let him have his way sometimes! They have a huge parking by the way so you can drive here. We started with the crab cakes which were good but needed salt and a little more seasoning. They were however really crunchy on the outside. The pink drizzle on it didn't taste like anything. We shared the spicy furikake chicken and short ribs with sides of purple sweet potato salad and greens. The chicken was delicious!! It was crunchy, seasoned well and basically the best fried chicken I've had! I wish they had more chilli flakes and over all the chicken, not just the pieces on top! The short rib was tender and was a bit sweet. The server told us it tastes like sweet soy but it didn't really taste like soy, just sweet! It was pretty good though so don't be put off by the sweetness! The purple sweet potato salad was ok, I prefer my regular potato one! The greens were just basic. The virgin lilikoi, lime and pineapple drink was terrible. Tasted of artificial pineapple syrup! Our server forgot to give us silverware, then got just my husband a knife and had to go back and get me one. I guess she was overworked? You must be wondering why I'm giving this place 4 stars? It's because the chicken...
