5 well deserved stars. I came in right before close and was met with happy, friendly, and helpful employees.
The menu was simple and clear, which is appreciated. $12 for single, $17 for double, or $22 for triple. All options for Poke and sides are on display.
Kapua was the one who helped me. She noticed I was having a hard time choosing, and offered samples. I might have got lucky, but she let me split my order. So, I got the double, but got to split two sides, and four smaller portions of Poke.
I got the house spicy mayo, Hawaiian ahi, Kalbi ahi and the aku Hawaiian. I got the Ula mash and the mac-n-cheese for sides. Everything was great. The double was big enough for two, but on a good day, I could eat it all myself.
Now for the embarrassing part. As soon as I got to the car, it was devoured by everyone. This was supposed to be a pre-dinner snack, but after a long day at the beach........no photos were taken in its pristine glory.
We come out to visit family every few months, and my goal is to try new places each time. I'm going to have to make another stop at Ellie Girl Poke this trip.
I took a photo of the plate after it had been partially ravaged, but it doesn't do the shop justice, so I'll have to go back and get a photo of a new plate.
Edit: I DID go back the next day, and it was even better the second time. They had a couple more flavors out that weren't out...
Read moreStopped in for the first time today, my main objective was to find a poke shop in Hilo that is comparable to Umekes in Kona. Overall I was pleased. They seem to provide a good balance between the traditional style of poke and the new aged style of poke. Very creative with their recipes. Pricing is extremely fair. I got the three choice poke bowl and a giant 1lb container of dried ahi all together for $35. That was a great deal. I had the Cali roll, mixed plate and mahi mahi ceviche. All were good. Really appreciated the opihi in the mixed plate. My only critique is that the size of the Cali roll poke was substantially smaller than normal sized poke. It was still my favorite out of the three though. I liked their spin on the imitation crab salad, I could eat that side by it’s self. I’ll definitely be a return customer. Umekes and The Poke Shack in Kona, hands down serve the best poke on the island. Ellie Girl is a good substitute for them when on the Hilo side. Same fresh quality. If they made an avo poke, I’d...
Read moreThis poke shop is really creative and unlike other shops around. The inside looks beautiful, like something out of someone's imagination very cool interior design. The food presentation was ok. I would expect something a bit more fancy than metal containers for your main show case. Most of the poke flavors I tried were good (spicy Ahi, Korean Ahi). They had a large selection of Hawaiian sides available. The only thing I was not fond of was the large sizes of the fish and the pineapple habenaro Ahi. The large pieces would be fine but it doesn't soak up enough of the flavor. This is why traditionally the peices would be cut smaller. The pineapple habenaro sauce had no flavor or spice at all I had to make my own sauce at home with shoyu, teriyaki, and yellow bird habenaro sauce. I can definitely tell the fish is fresh and that's where the price comes in. Compared to other places it's a bit more expensive but it's also a local company. I definitely recommend...
