Umalu's is a dining option at the Hyatt Regency Resort on Maui. My husband and I visited in March 2022, and we stayed at the Hyatt. We dined at Umalu's twice and order some food to-go once while on vacation. I discovered Umalu's as a dining option prior to our trip and made a few reservations which I highly recommend. As you can imagine, Hawaii is a highly visited destination at any time of the year. I strongly encourage planning as far ahead in advance as you can. Most restaurants can be found on Open Table or Google for reservations.
For the price, this is an easy dining option for anyone. The quality and quantity of food is just right. Drinks are quite pricey, but again it's a realization that in Hawaii prices are higher.
Umalu's is an open-air restaurant right next to the main pool at the Hyatt Regency. There is a large bar where you can drink and dine as well as more casual table seating for reservations. Umalu's is open for lunch and dinner. There is a Happy Hour from 11am-noon and you can get discounted selected mai tai beverages and domestic beers. In our different dining experiences here, we enjoyed the nachos with pork as an appetizer. This is a large serving of food, plenty for a table of four. We also tried the fried calamari and the wood-fired pizza. They only serve wood-fired pizza on select nights during the week, but definitely make sure to try it if you can. We ordered the Hawaiian and the Palace pizzas. I would say 3-4 people can easily enjoy 1-2 pizzas.
Overall, this was an excellent casual dining option while we stayed at the...
Read moreThis place scams you! The server was so disrespect the minute we walked in she said "what do you need?" in the rudest manner. We got take out and she told us to figure out our checks ourselves... Since we did not tip her because of her lack of customer service, she decided that it would be a lovely idea to add a 20% tip herself. I looked at my bank activity the next day showing that it was charged with the 20% went back to the restaurant, spoke to a manger and he said "that happens all the time" last time I checked Hawaii is still in the US and I've never had that kind of charge before. He told me to call the bank, which I did of course and my bank said that they have never heard of that nor do that. So I went back to the restaurant to talk to him again and he still said that same thing that it happens after the fact that I called my bank. Then he asked what bank I had so I said Wells Fargo which is a national bank and of course he was baffled because he did not have an excuse after that. He asked me who I spoke to for my bank which at that point why would it matter because I'm sure all of them are certified to answer questions about that specific bank because they work for that bank... Showed me a receipt that said the receipt was closed with no tip but the manager states that it may be a "coding issue" that all the bills take out 20% and still blaming it on my bank. Should this issue not be bought up to corporate to be fixed then...? But thank you Michelle & Kenneth for this horrible...
Read moreTaking Covid woes out on us. Cocktail fans take note and go elsewhere, anywhere else. I recommend the Sheraton, better beach, better bar, there’s actual alcohol in the drink, friendly staff and normal priced drinks. It says online there specialty drinks are $14 which is comparable to Whalers Village, downtown Lahaina, even the Four Seasons. But there actually $19, even just house whiskey and coke $19, seriously? In addition to this outlandish price it has no alcohol in it. I drink 4 times a year, I drank 4 of those $19 drinks in 90 mins and felt like I had drank nothing. So the 5th I order a double which is $13 on top of the $19 for house whiskey and coke, after proper tip your looking at $40. It’s unclear why the Hyatt thinks it’s ok to charge this for drinks but I’m staying here 7 more days/nights and I’ll be venturing down to the Sheraton and like I said anywhere else. Lastly the food is subpar. The bartenders and pool servers also 1 star. Unfriendly and all about business. I know the last two years were tough as the work force shrank and those left still working we’re overworked, so I give leeway here and if they don’t want to earn max tip that’s there prerogative. Last pro tip to fellow travelers staying here and reading this, it’s a short walk to the pool bar next door at they Hyatt Residency, prices are $16, little less, still more than the rest of the island but at least the drinks are made...
