Gruby's New York Deli — Restaurant in Hilton Head Island

I heard that Gruby's has been around HH 30 years (!). Somehow we've managed to miss them. Better late than never. This is the real deal - a wonderful, well run diner style restaurant serving outstanding food. We got omelet plates, Greek and the Deli ? which had corned beef, pastrami and 2 kinds of cheese. Both were big, served hot and the home fries are really special with little strings of crispy fried onions - all clearly made fresh - and 2 slices of toast. My Wife's Greek omelet was a top notch version of this staple, stuffed with hot sauteed spinach, etc. They are clearly taking pains to put great food on the table, unfortunately a effort rarely made these days. Service was quick, friendly and attentive. We sat outside the restaurant in a covered area where unfortunately an enormous ceiling fan was running creating quite a breeze. Umbrellas on some of the tables fixed that but take note. Frankly there are not a lot of really good breakfast places on HH. Watusi has some good stuff but is a bit precious. Southern Coney is a dump serving lowest denominator crap. From my experience, just from one visit, Gruby's is at the top of the heap. Can't wait to go back for more or a nice deli sandwich for lunch. I don’t eat sandwiches often. mainly because the meat at most places use inferior products with no flavor and you get fillers, like old lettuce, sliced lame tomatoes, again using even cheap veggie fillers at that. This place is beyond crazy good. first off, They serve quality meat I got the double stuffed hot option with a choice of 2 meats, (I chose corned beef and brisket).I did not add any veggies except provalone Cheese. I asked if they could toast it on rye bread, which they were happy to. i also asked for raw onions on the side. when it got to my table it was perfectly hot. I added deli mustard to my sandy that they had available on the table and topped it off with the side onions and a bit of the fresh coleslaw they give on the side. let me just say, this was the most delicious, tastiest little sandwich I’ve ever eaten. beyond amazing; Slaw, meat, The service too. Food was ok. Our waiter told us we could sit anywhere we wanted and when we chose by the window he was kinda upset with us. This was our first time here and we didn't know nor were we told that when we were done eating we needed to go up to the counter and tell our table number to pay. We kept waiting for the bill to be brought not knowing this. Also not sure how we were supposed to know we sat at table 1 🤷. There was only one server trying to take care of the entire restaurant which ended up filling up while we were there so refills and anything else you might need during your meal was a no go. Also never got the juice that was supposed to come with the kids meal we ordered and since the server never came back we had to share our drinks with the kiddo.
