I wanted to love this place, but my experience last week was completely soured by the manager, Erica. If sheās still in charge, Iād honestly give this restaurant zero stars. I discovered this spot online because the photos looked great, and Iām always excited to try new places in Hoboken. The food was decent, but the service was disappointing, and it became clear why as the evening went on.
I didnāt have a reservation, but they accept walk-ins, so I was seated without issue. However, my server seemed low energy and distracted, which initially confused me. That confusion turned into understanding (and frustration) when I saw how Erica, the manager, treated the staff. She spoke to the servers in such a condescending and loud manner that it was impossible for guests not to hear. Her unprofessional and demeaning behavior created a tense and uncomfortable atmosphere, which completely ruined the experience for me and my friend.
As someone who works in the service industry myself, I couldnāt help but feel bad for the staff. The restaurant felt over-managed, with no sense of morale or respect. It was so upsetting that I even asked for the managerās name to ensure this behavior didnāt go unaddressed.
Iām leaving this review because I canāt in good conscience support a place where staff are treated so poorly, especially when itās so blatantly obvious to guests. But I was really disappointed that La Casa Restaurant was closed, and I had high hopes that they would open a fantastic restaurant after their long renovation. I don't mean to be impolite, but the chef seems to have made a mess of the menu. I donāt know how they made this dressing , but it was extremely sour and bitter. Additionally, we ordered shrimp tacos and some drinks. I'm not sure why, but our drinks were served in unusually tiny glasses that I couldn't understand where they found them.. On a REALLY GOOD note, the service was good, as the staff frequently checked on us. However, I would suggest changing the establishment's concept and improving the presentation of the dishes. Next up we were rushed to order all food (each course) at once despite us being inconvenienced by the delayed seating. Found a hair in the meatballs. Steak was asked to be cooked medium rare and was closer to blue. After all of these issues we were offered a slice of carrot cake as a make good. We declined and expressed extreme dissatisfaction. We were told by one server that the meatballs would be removed from the bill due to the hair found. Then the $250 bill arrived with meatballs still on. When disputing this to the manager she said it was her employees mistake to offer the removal of the itemā¦and still Iām expected to pay after ANOTHER MISTAKE. After 10 minutes of conversation with the manager about our utter disappointment in the whole experience she continued to double down and offer no gesture of apology for the multitude of issues.
