came back to Krakatoa for lunch! Everything was amazing from their customer service, the presentation of their food and of course the flavors were sensational. Their food has all these textures and flavors that melts in your mouth. Hands down to Krakatoa, this restaurant is the best of the best here in Hollywood, “ highly recommended “ - Me and my family were walking in Hollywood Near the Young Circle when we decided to go for dinner, then we spot this cool looking logo of the restaurant named KRAKATOA, so we decided to try it because we love to try new things all the time and this restaurant catches our attention because it’s beautiful inside and decorations are very traditional from Indonesia. At first we were amazed by the restaurant decorations and then we were lost because this was our first time trying Indonesian cuisine so we asked a few questions to our server and he was very knowledgeable and gave us few suggestions, that helped us to place our order right away. When we order the drinks we ordered the “ Happy Soda” and that drink was Amazing!, if you come to Krakatoa you gotta have it because this is a traditional Indonesian street drink that will make you come back to this place over and over again! The food came to our table in a good timing and the presentation of each dish was top notch, we were very happy we came. Flavors OMG! So much different textures and delicious flavors that we never experienced before, the chicken and the beef were cooked to perfection and when you are eating the rice, the vegetables, nuts, rice crackers all together with your proteins it creates the most amazing feelings while you are tasting these delicious dishes all created by the inspiration and the wide experience of Abe. When we came to decide what to order for dessert, we just told our waiter to surprise us with it and he brought us something the chef placed on a white plate and it looks like small pot with a little tiny plant 🌱 in it. He said “ this is our dessert Six Feet Under made with aguacate, coconut milk, vanilla and ice! “. Guys, this Six Feed Under is a must have dessert when you come here to Krakatoa, definitely!!! This is a hidden Indonesian jewel here in Hollywood Blvd. near Young Circle, I personally met the owners John & Abe, they are a very professional and humble people that are always whiling to serve you and make you feel very special and welcome during your visit to Krakatoa and the same goes for their staff members they all are very knowledgeable about their food choices and always ready to help you get the best experience while you are enjoying their delicious Indonesian cuisine. Read moreThis might be one of the only, if not the only, Indonesian/Malaysian restaurants in the entire state, and I’m glad to say it did not disappoint. Coning from a Western country where Indonesian cuisine is much more prevalent – and having visited Java several times in the past – I was really looking forward to this meal. Krakatoa brought back memories of Java instantly with its deep, rich flavors that truly reflect the essence of the Indonesian kitchen.
We started off with the Sate Ayam (chicken skewers), and while it was exactly what I was hoping for, the peanut sauce still managed to surprise me — full of flavor, perfectly balanced between sweet and savory, and clearly made with care. A great way to begin.
The star of the afternoon for me was definitely the Beef Rendang. Cooked slowly over several hours, the meat was incredibly tender — it practically melted in my mouth. The combination of sweet and spicy flavors was spot on, and the dish felt authentic and satisfying all at once.
We also tried the Semur, this time made with lamb. While less sweet than the Rendang, it was still very flavorful. The meat was thinner but still tender and the seasoning subtle but effective. A solid dish, and great to share next to the standout Rendang.
Service was another highlight of the afternoon. Our server, Arsenii, was genuinely kind, attentive, and showed a natural sense of hospitality. Generally, I am not sensitive for service, but I really appreciated his personal approach. With the right training, I can absolutely see him working in a much more high-end setting such as a 1 or 2-starred Michelin establishment.
Krakatoa’s prices are slightly above your typical casual dining spot but absolutely fair considering the quality and portion sizes. I’d place it in the mid-range category — not super cheap, but inexpensive for what you’re getting in return: a thoughtful, well-prepared meal that’s hard to find anywhere else in the region.
As a final note, it’s also worth mentioning that all the meat served is Halal, which reflects the cultural and religious traditions of Indonesia. This also makes the menu more inclusive, which I personally appreciate.
To all Floridians — you may not be as exposed to Indonesian cuisine as people in some other parts of the world, but Krakatoa offers a fantastic introduction. I strongly recommend taking the time to visit. You absolutely...
Read moreMy friend and I came to eat lunch here earlier last year and every now and then I keep thinking back on the colorful feast for the eyes and taste buds Krakatoa was. I had never tried Indonesian food before; it was such an unforgettable meal and I definitely have been meaning to come back and try different menu items.
We were greeted upon entering by the owner and sat close to the window at the front of the restaurant. The owner was incredibly helpful in helping us choose which dishes to try and I am happy to report that he indeed did not lead us astray. Everything was absolutely delicious and the array of colors in each dish was truly a visual treat. The decor around the restaurant only enhances the story that the food already expresses on its own.
To start, we ordered the tahu gejrot tofu appetizer. The owner asked us how we liked the dish, my friend and I were honest and said that we wished it were spicier, and within moments he came back with a little dish of spice for us to add to our liking. It truly only made the dish even better. Even when we got to the point where we already ate all the tofu, we asked for spoons and we slurped the sauce left in the dish like the Beast eating his porridge in Beauty and the Beast. I'm sure one of us would've liked to lick the dish clean of it were socially acceptable to do so.
It's been a while so I'm not entirely sure, but for our entrees, we ordered one of the lamb and one other tofu/vegetarian dish. I believe one was the rendang tofu, but definitely not sure. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves, but the flavors, textures, and colors were unlike anything else I've eaten before down here. The dishes are a bit pricey, but I definitely think you're getting your money's worth with service and quality. Only the pandan cake felt a little lackluster in comparison to the food that preceded it, so I guess that means I just need to come back and try their other desserts!
This place is truly a gem in downtown Hollywood;...
