I came to this restaurant 09/17/24 around 10-11. I decided to try this restaurant based on the sign in the front saying coffee for people who don’t like coffee. I come to the desk realize there is only two choices for coffee. I get told by two servers I can sit where ever I would like. Then I saw a large black sign saying I can seat myself. I sit in the corner at a 4 chair table alone. A female server comes up to me asking me 3 times back to back to move to another table. I ask why she said because I am alone I should sit at a 2 person table. I told her I don’t want to. She said I have to because I’m alone. There was 4 two person tables in the center of the dining area. I told her I don’t want to sit in the middle of the room. So I sit towards the back wall and there is staff running back and forth touching my shoulder. I start to feel very uncomfortable so I get a Togo box. The server never checked on me I had to approach her for a water and a to go box. I come to the register and I ask for military discount. She tells me they only do it on soda but the machine isn’t working today. So at this point I tell her twice I want to speak to a manager. Then she tries to explain about the soda machine. I tell her I don’t want a soda I want to speak to your manager. I speak to the manager she explains the female server is new and that they change the sign at lunch time. I told that military and law enforcement do not like to sit with our back to the front door. She said next time she will seat me. Manager said the co2 is out on the soda machine. This was my very first time visiting and I will make sure it is my last. Never been to a restaurant that demands people to move tables. wish I would’ve left when she asked me to move tables because I was so uncomfortable . 30.80 for a brisket plate and one iced coffee with some terrible service Discount for something that isn’t available?!!

Demetri’s is without a doubt a cool spot and somewhere you should hit at some point while living in Birmingham. The building is unique and untouched since 1961 so there is a simple and enjoyable aesthetic that gives an old school rustic vibe. If you’re coming for knock your socks off, authentic BBQ, you’ll be pretty disappointed. The BBQ is nothing to write home about and isn’t fall off the bone tender pork. You can order your pork chopped or sliced, they do not cook the pork long enough to make it tender enough for pulled pork, nor does it have a strong smoke flavor, smell, etc. Their BBQ pork is a great example of BBQ made with an electric oven with smoke introduced for a portion of the cooking. The fries are frozen, and the corn bread is from a box, etc etc. It may have been an authentic southern BBQ restaurant at some point, however, there is no argument to be made that it is in modern times. What you DO come here for is a relaxed, friendly meal. Every customer you see has a smile on their face, the staff is polite, and the tea is fresh and plentiful. I have not been to Demetri’s for breakfast, from what I’ve been told that is the meal to have here and what they are known for by locals. Enjoyable, relaxed spot, give it a try, just don’t expect BBQ.

First timer. We had the ribs , okra, and roasted veggies and kids burger with chips . Love the history of this place and the original menu on the wall. I"ve been on a quest to find the best bbq in town and don't understand why this place doesn't come up on more lists. It took so long to find this place. It really is top notch. The ribs fall off the bone. bbq sauce is vinegary and delicious. Fried okra is fresh and whole, best I've ever had. Waitress with blonde hair is super sweet and made us feel right at home. Kept the sweet tea coming .. My son loved his hamburger as well, which came with all the fixings despite being from the kids menu. The pickles that come with the BBQ are good, wish you got about 10 of them though hah. 😋 If you have a big car be careful with parking. It's tight. Will have to come back and try the breakfast next.

I had a horrible first time experience. We visited Demetri’s for my two friends birthday. We had a wonderful server, Trish, who ensured that our food was served in a timely manner. Along with that she provided exceptional customer service. However, we had an issue with our ticket cost. Upon receiving our tickets, we noticed that there was an upcharge for the wings. Not that it is a huge issue, but we did want to point out to the server and management that a customer can be mislead by the cost of the wings. When the two managers came to the table, one male and one female, the male got very aggressive with us. He made a comment that said, “Do you expect us to put the price of everything on the menu.” Then he made several other sarcastic remarks. Ending with statement saying that, “I was not a big his big fan.”

He missed the full picture. We did not mind paying for the food. We just wanted the company to understand that the cost of their food is misleading. I, along with my friends will not be returning to Demetri’s. Management was very poor...
