Because we are Rodney Scott fans and love the food and his story, I’m providing the most honest and hopefully helpful review I can.
There’s just something missing at the Homewood location. This is the second time in a few months we’ve been on a Sunday afternoon and felt this way. The staff/management is off. The building is beautiful and the location is superb. I have to question why it never seems busy. The vibe is all wrong.
My husband and I sat at the bar. The bartender/server seemed to be the only one working. She wasn’t the only worker there…there were at least 5. She was just the only one actually WORKING, so I get why she was a bit grumpy. The other people there were just sitting and standing around talking. We felt bad for her. We came in because we saw an a special on Instagram for $2 drafts and $1 wings. She didn’t know about the special -3 of the 5 beer taps were empty, so there were only 2 beers choices. Sunday afternoon during football season, every tv was on women’s volleyball Music blasting and competing with the volleyball. Not a mix of various types of music either, but instead a stream of really bad R&B. The employee cups, yeti, purses and backpacks were what got me. (See images) The two girls and one guy at the order counter had their items spread out all over that counter. At one time there was a backpack, a purse, a bag, a jacket a Yeti and two of their drink cups. It’s a food service counter. Gross! The bartenders purse and yeti cup were on full display on the back bar which was a mess and had more half used cups. Again, see pics. At one point a manager type person with a brief case went to the register and then exited the restaurant unmoved by the loitering employees and cups.
Upside…the wings were killer! Oh so good! And you guys have the best onion rings. So whoever was in the kitchen, was on point.
I genuinely hope this is helpful. Get some new management. Inform your employees of specials, put a sandwhich board out and get some of that foot traffic, have the staff put their personal items away, no personal drinking cups hanging around food prep areas, when a mgr is there even if he’s just walking through, why wouldn’t he stop this? And by all means, this is Alabama. Volleyball on every tv? Really?

Read moreUpdate 12/29/24 The flavors this chain is known for has returned. The service was on point. Teamwork, great vibes, and most importantly the food was great today. The sides, mac and cheese was creamy. The potato salad was filled with that slight tart taste and the sprinkle of green onion added a great blend of flavor. The beans has that smoky flavor. The corn bread was moist. The meat carried the flavor of the smoke from the pits. The banana pudding was back and filled with cream, whipped topping, and bananas. You can taste the vanilla that was added in the heavy cream. The teamwork and the spirit of the Birmingham store was present today and did not disappoint.
Update: 7/21/24
We've visited this brand many times in almost a decade. The same management team so it's not a shift in leadership or change, just cant put my finger on it. Whatever it is, its affecting the quality this place is known for delivering.
The corn bread was dry and not edible. In the past, the corn bread was moist and served hot. The brisket was delectable with fatty salty ends That is a personal favorite. . The fish was crisp but the hushpuppies were overcooked. The macaroni and cheese was a bit dry and maybe a bit overcooked. As I sit in the dining room with other customers, I observe the staff did not approach any tables to check on the customers. The table next to me, the patron is upset with the quality of food they received. Today, hospitality has exited the building
This has always been a lbrand where you could receive dependable, consistent, and quality BBQ, Today may have been a bad day. Like other area restaurants, we are willing to give this place another chance. The days of the Birmingham store of quality B B Q and passionate teamwork needs to rejuvenate this store with great service, and Great BBQ.
This location is a larger and a spacious version of the Birmingham location. The whole pig was juicy and smoked. In my opinion it needs just a bit more smoke flavor. The sauces are still tangy, sweet, spicy, and the mayo version. The mac and cheese was baked and moist. The greens were okay. Potato Salad was good and needed just a hint of mustard. Overall, the food is consistent and you won't be...
Read moreI’ve been to this location 3 times in the past 2 weeks. First time they were out of burgers, but the owner was there so I let him know that I was disappointed. He recommended the beef sandwich and purchased it for me. The sandwich was ok, but I like the burger. We were the last customers so apparently they shut down the fryer and forgot the fries for both my order and my friend who was with me. We get home and the hush puppy is missing from her fish plate. After all that, still couldn’t get the order completed correctly even with the owner in the building. We call the restaurant and they agree to provide banana pudding for pick up the following day. This was all with Lindsay, who was fairly helpful. Second time, the next day I go to pick up the banana pudding and Chase was exceptional so I agreed to come back for another visit at a later date. The banana pudding is delicious. Third time, the cashier is not prepared and appears to have a hard time hearing and is generally not very friendly. We get our order for takeout, only to get home and we have someone else’s order. Yes, I totally should have checked but unfortunately I didn’t. Once again I call back to the restaurant and ask to speak to Lindsay, they asked who was calling to which I replied “a customer”. The person on the other end used an expletive stating that they would “hang up on my !?$&”& ?!$:@“ and places me on hold. When Lindsay comes to the phone, she remembers me. I explained first the rudeness, unprofessionalism and profanity used by the person that answered. I inform her of the situation with the order and that I will not be returning to this location again because I continue to be disappointed. She offers to refund my order, which I agreed to because of the continued inconvenience. I recommended she contact the person whose online order I received and she shrugged that off like she’d just wait for them to call in about the wrong order. I appreciate the owner and his attempt to make things right, the food is good too! However, the staff at this location has left a lot to be desired in terms of service and accuracy, so I’m going back to the Avondale or Trussville location when I...
