A little pricey but inflation is real right now with food costs through the roof. Absolutely worth the trip. Food is well prepared, well plated and delicious. (See photo for exact meals purchased) I spent $150 including tip, which really wasn't bad to feed 8 people because we were all full and satisfied in the end, even had a small amount left over. It was so good that I actually wanted to eat more but i was just too full. I would say each of the meals I purchased easily feed 1 adult and 1 middle school aged child. Or 2 adults that eat recommended sized portions. I purchased 2 types of cooked sushi, 1 baked and 1 deep fried. Both absolutely delicious. 1 order can easily feed a family of 4 or 5. Customer service was good. 1 employee took the time to answer my detailed questions about the menu her name was Anna, please tip her when she's providing this level of customer service. Establishment was clean and well maintained. If i was so happy with service why not five star? I ordered extra veggies and double pineapple for my meals. I didn't appear to get that i had a total of 5 pineapple chunks and if that was double it would mean the norm is 2.5 pineapples. That, would be unacceptable at these prices and finally I did not observe hand washing or sanitizing between handling of cash payments and handling of prepared orders. OVERALL, I was very pleased with my experience and meals and will happily continue to spend my hard earned...
Read moreWe visited Shiki during the Iron Bowl, of all times. The restaurant was much less full than it usually appears during this time, so, not being huge football fans, we took advantage. We started with the Red Dragon Roll as our sushi appetizer. It was delicious and flash-fried to crispy perfection.
Looking over the menu I began wondering if this restaurant was owned by the other local Thai chain in Birmingham, because of the similarities. I almost went with one of my tried and true dishes from that restaurant, but decided to go in a different direction at the last minute. I chose the ginger and mushrooms entree with chicken. The dish consisted of chicken, mushrooms, carrots, and zucchini tossed in a sauce with rice on the side. While the ingredients were of good quality, I was unimpressed with the sauce covering the dish, which was thick, dark, and super sweet. I've never been a huge fan of super sweet asian dishes though. I did find the long slivers of fresh ginger that were dispersed throughout the dish to be delightful.
My dining partner tried the spicy beef salad, which he enjoyed, although it wasn't quite enough food for dinner. Good thing we had the sushi!
We found the service to be lacking; long waits in between visits to our table and empty drinks. But, like I said, we did visit during the Iron Bowl. Overall, I'd give it a second try, but I would definitely choose a...
Read moreNice looking place. Trendy. Music a bit too loud for good "date" conversation. But very nice area --- & the place looks gr8. Nice ppl. But sadly, if you want authentic, intricate, layered & luscious Thai flavor - then try elsewhere. The "Spicy Coconut Soup" (add chicken) was not either of those & had dried shroons just cut and garnished onto it - not cooked at all - and they definately tasted that way - "raw" tasting - like you just picked it out of the pile & threw it on top. They weren't even stir fried down a tiny bit with simply plain oil or garlic. Definately not enough coconut flavor by far - so there was no "depth" or luscious "mouth feel" to the soup - and the flavors are not "layered" at all. No Kefir Lime leaf or lemongrass or ginger chunks to layer & "marry" the flavors. Idk - maybe its a different regional type of soup thats not the traditional Tom Kha Kai most of us know & adore.
The main dish was ok. Again - not layered in flavor. No oyster sauce or fish sauce flavors at all. Definitely no "roasted pepper" taste as described on menu - and not spicy at all either. Had to add red pepper. Regardless - it wasn't bad - just wasn't up to par. Maybe I got them on a bad day. Didn't try the sushi - it might be gr8 - but overall this place won't bring me back for the Thai menu. Might give it one more go just to try the sushi - but looking elsewhere...
