Guava Smoked came highly recommended by da Ohana! Sooo glad I listened...my only regret was that I did not try them earlier!
Guava Smoked can be a bit of a challenge to get to...The entry is not visible from the main road, you need to go around the back to access the tiny parking lot that most definitely has trouble fitting big trucks. Street parking in the neighborhood is also a bit challenge as well. Up the stairs, follow the signs; Guava Smoked is located on the second floor. Once in the interior is pleasant, spacious and modern...unlike like many old school diners in HI. I love the open kitchen concept as well.
If you want to try more than one item I recommend getting the Mix Plate; you can choose 2 items from the plate lunch menu. I believe you can combine most of the items, there are a few exceptions...the friendly staff will let you know.
My Choice:
~ Smoked Mixed Plate: Loco Moco (Spicy) & Butterfish Collars w/ Mac Salad:
Loco Moco (Spicy) - 5/5 The Loco Moco here is done differently. They use Pork & a creamy White Gravy instead of the traditional Beef and Brown Gravy. Very different, but oh so tasty! If you are expecting a traditional Loco Moco, you might be a bit stumped, but I doubt you 'd be disappointed.
Butterfish Collars - 5/5 Where have I been?! (Oh yeah...stuck on the mainland) The fish was so tender, I devoured everything...bones, tail and all. Not a meaty or hearty fish, light, flaky and buttery like the namesake.
Don't forget to grab a Guava Bar or two for dessert!
Another thing I really liked; the container was cardboard not Styrofoam!
This is one of my go to spots now! I need to try everything...
Read moreI've been hearing about this place for years and finally got a chance to check them out. Why did I wait so long? The food is da bomb!
It is on Kapuhulu Ave., which can be very buys and awkward to go to a business due to the limited and tricky parking in the area. It is also not easy to spot as they are on the second floor of a small building. if your lucky, they do have limited free packing in the back, but there is some also an open pay lot across the street.
What I have always heard about was their guava smoked duck, but unfortunately, they only do it on certain days. Instead, I got the spicy guava smoked pork and the others I was with got the regular. Easiest way to describe it is that it is pieces of cut pork like Char Sui. It is a little sweet and very tasty. My spicy pork had a nice kick, but was hot were you wouldn't enjoy the smoky pork flavor. The regular was just as good, but I like my spicy better.
There are lots of other guava smoked items to pick from and some unique preparations, so go thinking that there is just a limited offering. The menu isn't huge, but there are choices.
They got lots of space to eat. It is easy to dine there. Read the menu, place your order at the counter and pay, find a seat, and wait for your food. Quick and easy. There is even outdoor seating on a balcony facing the street.
I do want to add, that we found the staff supper friendly and helpful. We'll be back and especially to try that guava...
Read moreI went in on super bowl Sunday looking for a place that was not playing the super bowl and extremely extremely packed full of loud people, I found a coupon for this place in Hawaii's best coupon booklet and it looks so good. So I googled it to check out the rest of the menu and all the reviews had nothing but amazing things to say.
So I looked through the pictures and everything looked so incredibly delicious. I couldn't pick which thing to order. By the time I got there, I settled on the smoked chicken burger. I ended up getting the platter with macaroni, salad and kimchi.
The food was so delicious. I immediately understood why all of those reviews couldn't say enough good things about this place!!
I normally don't ever eat a full pate of food from anywhere but I ate every last bite. The chicken was moist but and charred in that really yummy way. The sides were exactly what I wanted. Just nice classic Hawaii Mac salad and fresh juicy kimchi was perfect.
I was a little confused initially when I got to the front because the entrance is around the corner up a flight of stairs or an elevator, but it only took me moments to figure out. I liked that they had an elevator option because my ankles were really tired so that was nice to not have to use the stairs.
The dining room is very spacious with lots of seating and there is also patio where I could look out onto the golf course while I ate
15/10 I could not say enough good stuff...
