Straight off the busy Kūhiō street into a tiki paradise. A beautiful lava flow fountain feeds the quaint hotel pool while matching “lava” lanterns flicker on your table and throughout the palm trees surrounding this outdoor dining cove. The simple menu (chicken, fresh-caught fish, shrimp, steak or tofu) allows the restaurant to focus on quality and flavor rather than variety. We shared the island fries (a volcano-sized helping of extra shatter crispy unsalted but still flavorful fries) to start then dug into a plate ($20) of 10 or so spicy garlic shrimp (one of sauce options is a delicious, mild hit of extra garlicky chili) with white rice, potato Mac salad and a generous mixed green salad and a bowl ($17) of tropically-dressed mixed greens with a fresh 3-4oz hunk of mahi mahi deliciously seared on top. My only complaint was the matsuri sauce (another sauce option) was a bit heavy handed on the fish and mayonnaise-y (I could have done without completely the fish was so good).
Our server, Amber, was so friendly, courteous, prompt and knowledgeable. It felt like we were on an island tour of the local populace while dining in a hidden gem.
NOTE: they’re still working on their liquor license so for now it’s BYOB - which actually makes this one of the most affordable delicious fish dinners in Waikiki. Bring your own booze if you need it!
Walk right through the Bamboo hotel lobby - the restaurant is on the ground floor to the right of...
Read moreDo not go there. We were a group of 3 and saw that this place had 4.4/5 so we decided to try it.
A server came right when we sat down, brought us 2 water cups and asked us if we would like spring rolls or fries to start. We hadn’t even looked at the menus so we kindly declined. We were not aware that this is a BYOB place. Photos on Google indicated that alcohol was served. We were told by the male server to go ask the female server if we would like a pina colada or specialty drink and go to ABC stores to grab our own liquor.
After reviewing the menus, we were ready to order. The female server took our order. Despite requesting a medium-well steak with rice, chicken with rice, and tofu with fries, we received rare steak, no chicken, double tofu, and fries. We kindly told them that they made a mistake. The female server apologized, took the steak back and brought it back a little less red (still super red). Then another guy came to our table and said that they ran out of chicken so they asked us if we would like shrimp instead. We ended up not eating the food as it tasted bad and it was not presented as shown on the menu.
Very weird experience overall. I don’t understand how a server can be overwhelmed when we were the only customers on site. We wouldn’t recommend wasting your...
Read moreThis place was very good; cuisine-wise and atmosphere wise. So, I’m a middle income manager and I like nice places. I also like genuine articles and avoid pretense.
I had the poke plate with the fire poke sauce. Strong sesame, creamy base, sticky rice bed. Seaweed addition to the poke base sauce was a great flavor. The potato mac was solid - potatos and pasta the right texture, nice crunch from the very sparingly (that’s a good thing) onion dices in the base. Greens were great - fresh, attractive, firm, ginger dressing. Cuisine is great.
Atmosphere is just as good. Wait staff, manager, others all friendly and competent. Amanda talked with us about the food. Great personality, attentive but not bothersome.
Open courtyard in an older hotel property, it has a lot of charm. Elvis or Don Ho or Sinatra could walk in this place. Pool and hot tub in the middle of the courtyard, diners benefit from the relaxed vibe the hotel guests give off while lounging. Tiki wood, candal festival lights, volcano themed poolside rock work. Cant beat it. And for two plates - $50. A welcome reprieve from the shake-down treatment we’ve gotten everywhere else on Waikiki.
It ain’t the Four Seasons, and it it’s not supposed to be. But it is good food and good atmosphere. Do yourself a favor...
