Musubi Cafe Iyasume, with its multiple locations in the Waikiki area, offers an authentic musubi experience. This review is specifically about their original location, which, in my opinion, delivers the best rendition of their offerings.
What sets this location apart from the others is the freshness of their products. Unlike their other outlets that primarily sell pre-made musubi, here they serve musubi made-to-order. The difference in taste is noticeable, especially in the cheese-topped musubis, which are best enjoyed warm.
The core of all their musubis is a fluffy bed of rice topped with a slice of spam. The creative array of toppings is where Musubi Cafe Iyasume shines - from bacon, avocado, cheese, and eel to kimchi, there is something to satisfy every palate. For me, the winning combination was the eel, avocado, and cheese musubi, reminiscent of the familiar flavors of sushi rolls. Each bite of these hearty snacks brings a sense of comfort.
While the use of spam, a common element in East Asian comfort food, might initially seem peculiar to those unfamiliar with the cuisine, it's the heart and soul of these musubis. Filling and convenient, these musubi make an excellent companion for a day out at the beach or on a hiking trail. Even if you are unfamiliar with East Asian cuisine, their musubis might just become your new favorite snack. And when you do visit, make sure to stop by their original location for the freshest, warmest, and most...
Read moreHonestly I didn't expect to like this place as much as I did. A small shop in Waikiki that was close to my hotel. There was always a line in the morning so I knew there was potential but wasn't sure if it was just because it was convenient or good food. The answer is definitely both. With many tourists needing a grab and go meal before their next adventure snorkeling, driving, going to the beach, Musubi Cafe is a fantastic almost unbeatable option. Homemade vibes with $2-$4 per packed musubi, it's hard to beat. The eel egg spam was featured in a news article at the shop so I had to try it and the lady at the counter also recommended the bacon avacado spam. The eel egg was definitely unique (putting a high end twist to the musubi concept) and flavorful. And the bacon avacado spam definitely pleases the American palate. Tastes very much like an American breakfast. But to me and my wife, you couldn't top the egg and spam musubi. Simple but more than just the spam since the egg compliments it and accentuates it just right. And the price is definitely right too. The rice balls I felt were not as flavorful and mostly rice. I'd recommend the traditional musubis. We ended up picking some up before a beach day and some up before our flight back to the mainland. There's no dine in option and little waiting room inside so you line up outside until your number is called over the speaker. Highly recommend as a very useful and...
Read moreI needed a hotel room for a night so booked the cheapest room I could find and it ended up being the Royal Grove (I'm going to write a review for this place because it was a blast).
I had just read an article that listed must-go food places on Oahu and Musubi Cafe was one of them - right across the street from Royal Grove. Better yet, I had a room with a balcony so could basically look across at Musubi Cafe.
I like the feel of the store - it's bright, had lots of odds and ends everywhere, handwritten signs, a sitting area, an ATM - a literal hodgepodge but it all works together and is charming.
I went in the evening and there was a super nice lady working there - I felt loved ❤️, haha. I was actually full so only got the poke and rice and one Musubi. I asked her what she liked and she pointed me to the egg, avocado, Spam one - so that's when I went with.
Back to the room, time to eat. I ended up eating both things right away as I gazed across the street at Musubi Cafe. Both items were great - the poke was very fresh - and prices are reasonable. For my two items and a Monster, it came to $19. I think it's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area or on your way...
