This place is interesting. It has a very unassuming front and the dim interior of a dive bar, with a pool table near the front and several large flat-screen tv monitors around the walls. One tv was playing what looked like a Thai language news channel, the rest had sports of one kind of another.
Just off the bar is a dining area that has a neighborhood joint vibe. There are hanging lamps over the tables and very casually dressed staff. I chose this place for a family get-together because it's close to my job and I could walk there. And it's open after most of the downtown restaurants are closed.
The reviews of the food were uniformly positive and my family as a whole like spicy food, especially my mother who grew up eating my grandmother's kimchi, which I think had a WMD half-life. My father's no lightweight either; he used to snack on raw jalapeños.
Anyway, it is an odd venue. But the food is very good. My mother and I had the Evil Jungle Curry, others had varying degrees of spicy or mild dishes, and we all shared some green papaya salad. This last was a little on the sweet side for my taste, but my mother asked for the spicy stuff on the side so it could be enjoyed by everyone.
I was not disappointed in the least. The staff look like they pitch in with all hands in all parts of the operation. Our server was also the bartender, and a couple of other people helped with serving and clearing, refilling water and so on, and they were all very friendly. It's a casual sort of hybrid joint that just works. Some people obviously go there to toss a few back, others to shoot some pool or hang out, and others to have some of the best Thai food in the area. I...
Read moreSala Thai serves the best Thai food on island! After accruing eight stamps at Suvarnabhumi, I can safely say Sala has the most authentic tasting Thai food; Pad Thai at Sala is as close as it gets to eating from the street vendors in Bangkok. My favorite dishes to order here are the red curry and jungle curry. My buddies always order their spring rolls. If you're a sweet talker, the kitchen will make a tasty kai jeow for you! Really hits the spot after you've been pounding a few stiff drinks. The bar staff is very generous. The locale may seem a little scary at first glance, but the grizzled regulars are harmless older gents. Look for the yellow (and decidedly hard to read) sign on Nuuanu Avenue when you're craving...
Read moreI found Sala Thai one night after work. I love thai food, and this place is darn good. I've been here over half a dozen times in the past month and have tried many dishes, and each dish I loved. The pad thai, fried thai wings, drunken noodles, BEEF SALAD, spicy thai fried rice, red curry, salacurry, and more. . . All delicious. I love thai Hot, and they make it THAI HOT, which is awesome. My favorite thing about all the delicious food is customer service. Each time I go here, I get 5 🌟 service. If you're looking for a good hole in the wall place to eat, have a mixed drink or beer, or even shoot pool (one pool table), this is the place. Plus, they're open until 2am...
