Zippy’s – 2 stars I’ll admit—I was being generous with this rating because I knew going in that my palate might not be quite ready for some of Hawaii’s local staples. Spam just isn’t something I’ve had much of or really craved!

Walking in, the vibe felt nostalgic—like a classic neighborhood dine-in spot. I ended up chatting with a fellow visitor from the mainland, and he swore by the spaghetti (which almost tempted me!). But I stuck with the TikTok favorite: the Zip Pac. It’s a loaded combo of Hawaiian staples—fried Spam, fish, teriyaki beef, and a piece of fried chicken, all served over white rice.

Visually, the plate was packed and definitely filling. But for me, it was a texture and taste thing—it just didn’t hit. I couldn’t finish it, but I’m still glad I gave it a try.

Service was pleasant, the space was decently clean, and there was plenty of parking. I saw a lot of locals enjoying themselves, which made it clear this is a go-to comfort spot for many. Someone told me Zippy’s is like Hawaii’s Chick-fil-A, and I can respect that. It just wasn’t my flavor lane.

If you’re visiting the island, I’d still say give it a try for the cultural experience. But for me, it was a one-and-done.

I heard Zippy's was a place that I had to try while in Hawaii and they didn't disappoint. I ordered the Fried Chicken plate (sauces on the side because I'm not a condiment lover). They only offer takeout or delivery so you won't be able to fully enjoy hot fried chicken unless you eat it outside as you walk out. There is no dine in eating at this time. They only offer takeout or delivery at this time. But back to this Fried Chicken plate, you get chicken fried 3 ways: Fried thigh, Chicken Katsu, and Korean Fried Chicken. Because I'm not a huge condiment person and opted to get them on the side, I'm glad I did because I didn't really care for the katsu sauce, but that Korean sauce was delicious. I wish I had gotten extra Korean sauce. Although I had takeout, the chicken was still nice and warm when I got back to my hotel. I didn't really care for the macaroni salad, but my friend loved it. I got a slice of the Rainbow cake for dessert and it was really good. You just don't see the different colors, you can taste the flavors of each slice. I'd definitely go back for seconds or even to try more of...

I have only been to this location, and Zippy’s in general, twice during my visit to Oahu. A puzzling case of polar opposite experiences.

First visit was wonderful. My malasadas were hot and fresh, bursting with crunchy AND chewy goodness. Only negative was the employees somehow forgetting my order until a friend pointed it out.

Second visit, man, had it been the first I would never have returned. Malasadas were fresh in texture and flavor, but were clearly cold. Only one had even the faintest hint of warmth. Maybe they were cooked first and left sitting out while my Loco Moco was being made?

Which brings me to the Loco Moco. It was painfully clear nothing in the meal was fresh or made from scratch. In fact, it had the texture and taste of something microwaved ... like they threw leftover frozen dinners together and called it Loco Moco.

In all seriousness, the beef patty looked and tasted like the cheap $0.99 Banquet Salisbury Steaks.

I have not tried it yet, but Leonard’s Bakery up the street is supposedly the best...
