Famous Fred... pretty good food!
Stopped in here for lunch on an otherwise very busy Saturday of running around metro-Bham. Decided to check out something new, although the business is very old apparently. The Mrs got (what I believe Fred is famous for) a chicken basket, and I got what basically was a cheeseburger just to try something else on the menu as well.
The chicken was seasoned very well and has a "cooked at home" flavor vs a commercial chain restaurant taste... this is definitely a good thing btw! Fries were standard imo and the dipping sauce is pretty good too. Every good restaurant that sells chicken tenders should have two sauces - Honey Mustard and their own rendition of a Zax Sauce. Famous Fred's default is the latter. The portion of chicken itself is quite a lot (at least on a quiet Saturday afternoon). Not sure if there's a specific number of tenders they try to serve or if it's more like "about THIS much". I honestly couldn't imagine (or wouldn't want) to eat the amount of food in a chicken finger basket and then having to return to work. I'd be miserable. The burger was very tasty as well. Not the typical American burger flavor... but more of a Purple Onion burger +1 level. Very tasty, filling as well.
Chicken plate, burger, 1 fountain drink ($1.99) and 1 fountain water ($0.50) = $16. Not terrible but why are we charging for water? Anyway, I'd definitely...
Read moreStill good in 2025. They play news songs on the radio. It is a working man's lunch spot. It is not a fancy Nancy froo froo la te da lunch place. It is open during breakfast and lunch hours but not for supper. They are not open on long weekends and holidays so if you show up and they are closed dont be surprised. Fortunately there is a chick fil a directly across the parking lot so you wont go hungry unless of course it is on a Sunday. I have been getting chicken from this place since 1987 and let me tell you the Chicken Bites Basket is worth all of the effort and inconvenience. It comes with a katchup/mayo mix sauce that is a must taste. I was concerned when a new owner took over a few years ago but he has really stepped up his game. He changed to a new type of bread roll that is better than the old biscuit. The cooks are great and all of the helpers that I have ever seen there have been good workers. It is a uniquely Hoover Alabama experience so I suggest that you make a plan and give them a try. here is an update for you. They changed the name to the hotspot, and the layout of the dining room has changed. The new owners are very friendly, and the food seems to have improved. Better hours and better selection we...
Read moreHotspot Hoover absolutely hit the mark for us! My wife ordered the cheeseburger with fried green tomatoes as a side along with a side of crispy corn nuggets, and every bite was incredible. The burger was juicy and full of flavor, while the fried green tomatoes added that perfect Southern crunch. The corn nuggets were golden, sweet, and fried to perfection — a true comfort-food treat.
I went with the 8-piece Honey BBQ boneless wings, and they were phenomenal. The wings were tender, smothered in a rich, sweet, and tangy honey BBQ sauce that was absolutely finger-licking good. The portion was generous, and the flavor was bold without being overwhelming.
From the quality of the food to the spot-on flavors, Hotspot Hoover has become one of my favorite places for wings and more after just one visit. Highly recommend if you’re looking for delicious, satisfying, and downright...
