Thought this was one of Houston's most unique bars. I would bring friends here often and tell them to try one of the unique cocktails on the menu, especially the old fashion. However, I recently brought a group of friends here for a birthday outing and upon arriving, there was a noticeably belligerent drunk person there who began to get boisterous, speaking loudly/causing a scene. Of course, this drunk person ended coming up to my group of friends and starting a verbal confrontation. However, I had just ordered everyone drinks when I realized what was going on and within the same minute, the employees/bartenders at the bar kicked my friends and I out without even asking what occurred and were pushing us and laying their hands on us in an aggressive manner. We were confused and dismayed by their lack of decency, manners, customer service, etc. In addition, they removed our (barely touched) drinks from our hands and mouths forcibly. I understand asking people to leave a bar in an appropriate manner, but laying your hands on people and getting aggressive/speaking rudely to them is beyond unacceptable behavior. Needless to say, what used to be my favorite bar in downtown and the bar I referred/recommended will no longer be on my list of bars to visit while I'm in downtown. Plus, the customer service has always been lacking since the bartenders tend to think they are holier than thou when serving their customers and put them on the back burner when it comes to tending to their customer's drink orders. The bartenders act like they don't want to be there serving the customers. They don't provide a kind, welcoming environment due to their lack of desire to engage in conversation with their customers and lack of desire...
Read moreThe balcony is what sold me! Sure, there's one around the corner at State Bar, but there's actual people watching to be had here. It isn't large, but it overlooks the 300 block of Main Street perfectly.
I'm not one for craft cocktails; so, I can't speak to those. They had great names and the rest of my group seemed pleased so, sure, they're great. They did seem priced a bit high, with cocktails ranging from $8-$13. Anything over $10 just seems excessive in Houston, but I'm coming around, slowly:)
Beer was wicked cheap! Local craft beers were priced at $3 & $4. This I can get on board with and I'm pretty sure a lot of people would join me.
Service, while not fast, was good. Even though saying "I'll be with you in a sec" is highly exaggerative, I appreciate a server/bartender that can acknowledge you being there. That's all a person wants and you guys deliver!
The crowd was a nice comfortable group of people I could easily walk through. It's hard to find a cool place that isn't packed, but rumor has it, the fire marshall regulates occupancy here. Thank goodness! Sadly, one day soon, the occupancy permit will increase and I won't like this place nearly as much.
Wondering where it's at? 300 block of Main, just past Deans. No, not the first law office. The second law office with a terrace above it. Give the guy your id and start climbing stairs, lots of stairs. At the top, open the door, and you've made it...to what might be the closest thing to a speakeasy In Houston since...
Read moreAtmosphere couldn't be better and the cocktails are fantastic, though overpriced (come on, we live in HOUSTON - you'll spend the same amount on fancy pants cocktails in Manhattan that are out of this place's league, but still they are worth it).
In my opinion, if they're charging that much and going for the whole exclusive speakeasy feel, then the bartenders should be happy to mix you something based on your taste. Sometimes they have been and sometimes they've given me attitude, but the drinks are always good.
Regarding lines, yeah if you show up after 9:30pm on a weekend you'll probably stand in line to get in for a while. Apparently they cap it at 94 people or something - once I was inside while friends were waiting in line and there were SO many open tables, so that seemed ridiculous, but another time it was packed already and it was kind of nice that there was a cap. So if you abhor lines, just go on a weeknight or before 9:30pm on a weekend, it's really not hard to...
