This place is awesome! The food here is super tasty, there is something for everyone. It's a twist on a long time tradition Asian dish, and they did it justice for sure. The Banh Bao/Dough bread here is legit and super light and fluffy. They have just about all types of protein for your Banh Bao, ranging from pork belly, tofu, chicken, beef, to seafood.
The Fat Fries with bulgogi and man oh man were those things amazing. The fries are super crispy and thin and the bulgogi is flavorful and tender the combination of the textures are amazing. I would come back for those alone. I'd like to try with the other meat options! I got the pork belly, big byrd, and bulgogi bao and all three were delicious. My favorite would be the pork belly for sure. The other two were good as well. I don't really like too much sauce on my chicken so the big byrd wasn't my favorite but it might be better for me if the sauce was on the side, but it wasn't bad. I enjoyed all my baos. The best thing was the Ice Cream Bao though. I got cookies-n-cream based on all the employees ice cream suggestions and they did not steer me wrong. It was absolutely amazingly delicious! I'd also return for this for sure!
The whole experience was great! There is plenty of parking in the parking lot. It's fast casual so you walk up and order and grab your own table and they bring the food out to you. The price is great and the food is damn amazing. The concept of the place is awesome. I loved everything about it. I can't wait to come back and try the other items. I would hands down recommend this to anyone looking...
Read moreI've been coming here for years and it still holds up as one of the best Bao places in Houston!
A personal favorite of mine is the Yummy Byrd, which I frequently crave from here- it has a lightly cooked outer coat that slightly crunches when you bite into it, giving way to a soft interior. The description doesn't tell you this, but it is incredibly yummy and one of the only baos here whose exterior is lightly crunchy like this! Most of the rest have the typical soft bao breading (which is still very yummy and very good).
My second favorite is the Pork Belly, which tastes like your standard pork belly found in many dishes, with the added bonus of having lightly crunchy cucumbers with it and a yummy hoisin sauce.
Other notable flavors for me are Chicken Masala, Beef Bulgogi, and Pork Katsu.
With that being said, you truthfully can't go wrong with any of the options as they're all very well-made. The meat on all the different choices is always cooked excellently, from the pork to the chicken to the curry to the fish; I've yet to try the duck though! The fries are very good here, and are extremely crunchy and satisfying to bite into. Don't be fooled by my photo, we had eaten well over half at that point.
For 6 baos and fries, we spent almost $50, so do be aware that the price does stack up rather fast here. Luckily, the baos are very filling and most people can fully eat between 2-4 before feeling full.
Overall, a very good place and I highly recommend trying...
Read moreOh my gawd, please donât waste your money here. It was just flat out bad.
Thereâs nothing âfatâ about the baos, itâs WAY overpriced and tasted very unappetizing. The baos were as small, if not smaller than some dollar menu items at your fast food joint.
We ordered midweek at 9p on GrubHub for a pick up order. The good thing is that they prepared the order in a timely manner, so they got a star for that. The other good thing is the avocado fries were perfectly battered and cooked, and I do wish they would have seasoned the avocado with a little salt before the battering so it had some flavor on the inside too. The sauce that came with it was whack.
We ordered 2 katsu baos, a fried fish one and also duck. So 4 baos and avo fries for $43. $43! Each individual part of the bao was not tasty. The sauces tasted weird , and The filling was small and dry. The kids couldnât even eat the katsu baos we ordered for them, because they sauce was spicy and it was not mentioned on the website menu description. The baos were soggy and unappetizing. I had to peel apart some drier part of the bao, which wasnât much, to give to them, and they were hungry.
No one ate their baos and we ended up throwing it away.
We should have just went to Whataburger, or literally anywhere else. Houston has way too many great options to be wasting your money here at Fat Baoâs, just...
