If we had not stumbled upon Flip 'n Patties on our last night in Houston we would not have remembered Houston fondly.
Where do we even begin with sharing our experience here?
First, the food was excellent in its own right and also legitimately authentic and traditional filipino food. Second, the atmosphere was authentically filipino and not trying to exploit some cultural gimmick. It was inviting and we got to meet and talk with the chef and one of the owners relatives. That filipino hospitality was there from beginning to end.
I can attest to this with serious credentials. My wife is filipino and I have spent a good deal of time in different parts of the Philippines, so I have a good deal of experience with authentic and traditional filipino food. In addition, being married to a filipina, we have tried every filipino restaurant we could find in Louisiana and California, all of which claimed to be authentic, but sadly, they were not! All of the other filipino restaurants that we have tried "lacked the confidence in authentic filipino food" (per my wife) and incorporated either local or other ethic food.
Not so for Flip 'n Patties. While I wanted to try everything on the menu, my first impression of the menu was that it was legit, even down to the filipino humor in butchering language! I tried the Chicken PuPu upon being told that it was his grandmother's recipe. Most of the time when someone says that, it is just a gimmick. Judging by taste alone, you could tell that this was his grandmother's recipe. It was amazing and second only to my wife's cooking. We also had the beef Flipanadas. That they use Waygu beef in all of their beef dishes is a testament to the quality of their food. The Flipanadas were incredible and the best empanada I have ever had. My wife had the pancit which was spot on. We also had a dessert in what appeared to be lumpia stuffed with ube halaya which was awesome. My wife and kids also had the halo halo which was, again, spot on. For an hour or so, you felt like you were in the Phillippines having the best homecooked meal you ever had.
Besides the authenticity and taste, the quality of the ingredients and the quality of the preparation also stood out. Rarely does a restaurant hit it right on every single level, but Flip 'n Patties is certainly one that does.
I had hoped to never have to go back to Houston. But now I'm looking forward to it just to go back to Houston just to go to Flip 'n Patties - that is until I can convince them to open in the New...
Read moreA popular food truck that I never got the chance to try, but that's no more! They now have a restaurant location. A week before their grand opening, I came for lunch and it did not disappoint. Apparently, this location replaced Agu Ramen in a small plaza on Eldridge. Parking is doable.
This is more of a self-served place. Order at the counter and they will give you a number stand. Silverwares and drinks are on your right. Help yourself to any tables, booths, and a community table in the middle. Interiors are nicely decorated with beautiful art from different graffiti to cartoons. My goodness! The women's restroom was like an icebox! I don't know if it was just that day but seriously, it was freezing in there. There were two private stalls and everything was clean. Any-who, onto the food.
Flip 'n patties burger: humongous with the most delicious fried cheesy stuffed panko breaded portabella mushroom. Like honestly, this burger was as big as my face. Infused with bacon, greens, tomatoes, and topped with their delish sauces. I especially like their bread buns. Very soft with a light taste, adding the perfect balance to this decadent burger.
On the other hand, the puet burger was equally delish. I love the house-blend sauce and combined with the sautéed onions was golden. You have an option of adding fries and a drink to your burger. Those are not included with the burgers and will cost you extra.
We only ordered regular fries on one of the burger orders. I think that was a smart idea because the fries portion was pretty big. You want to save room for the burgers. The regular fries were crunchy on the outside and super soft on the inside. Lightly seasoned, didn't even need any ketchup. If you don't want burgers then get the chicken pupu. It's a rice plate with fried crispy chicken. Love the rice, it had these seasoning that added a lot of flavors to the plain white rice. Chicken was moist and the meat was soft.
Flip'n fries were good, similar to the regular fries but with a protein choice added on. Pork skewers came with two. Good BBQ sauce and the meat was tender. For desserts, I tried the famous Filipino sweet, halo halo. This version was much better than the last one I tried. Purple yam ice cream was yummy with the flan, shaved ice, jack fruit, coconut jellies, red beans, and condensed milk.
Overall, friendly service and relatively quick with the food. Hopefully, they will have more items on their menu after the grand opening. I wouldn't mind coming back to try some more of their...
Read moreLet me start with this- I am not an adventurous eater. I stick to things I know, mainly American, Italian and some very basic Americanized Chinese. So when I found this place and my mom said it was on her list of places to try I got worried I was not going to find something I liked. Well alas all that worry was for naught. I will now sing Flip 'n Patties praises from the rooftops. Their Lechon Kawali garlic rice plate is now one of my top comfort foods. I am a HUGE fan of pork belly but not a lot of places do it let alone do it right. For anyone unsure of pork belly- it's really really thick cut bacon. I have never in my life loved rice like I love their garlic rice. Whatever seasonings and spices they put in there are fantastic. I wish I knew how to do that. And the fliprolls, guys I don't go egg rolls, or veggie rolls or anything really in an egg roll wrapper.....but these are to die for. When my husband and I just ordered a pickup order (#supportsmallbuisnesses) yesterday I kid you not I ordered 10 of them in addition to the 2 that come with my meal so we both had enough. My step daughter LOVED their food. My husband, who is an adult and can write his own glowing review can talk about the flip 'n fries he loves so much. And my parents can do their review to talk about their fantastic food as well. Before I go, I have to talk about the sauces. Some of them I cannot describe. As I mentioned earlier I am a picky person I make my husband (or in this case both my husband and my father- no judgement please) try things to tell me if I will like them. They both tried the suka sauce and said there was no describing it and I would have to wing it. It's fantastic. I cannot describe it either cause even yesterday my husband and I were talking about it again and I had nothing but it is so worth it. Just an overall amazing food experience. And I have to say they were so kind yesterday when my husband picked up the order, they even wrote us a nice message on the bag and sent us a coupon to come back. I am all for support small businesses right now and Flip 'n Patties deserves it now and forever. Go! Like now! Stop reading more reviews, it's worth...
