I will never visit or recommend Lazy Oak Beer Garden again.
Today, we came together to celebrate an amazing achievement with my staff within the service industry. We usually choose the same location for our celebrations and happy hour, but this time we opted for Lazy Oak Beer Garden due to its good reviews and appealing happy hour offerings.
We arrived around 4:30 PM and found the place not too busy. We sat at an unreserved table and waited for without being greeted what so ever. Noticing a QR code on the table, we decided to order directly from there, thinking it was standard procedure since it was our first time at this restaurant.
After placing our order, I realized we made a mistake on one item, so I approached the bar to request a change. Unfortunately, I wasn't acknowledged by the staff. When our food arrived, no one checked in on us to see if we needed anything, highlighting a clear disconnect between us and the wait staff.
Despite the lack of engagement from the staff—who were not approachable at all during our visit—we chose to stay and enjoy our evening. At one point, a server brought us drinks, and when I requested an additional one, he rolled his eyes before returning with it.
Next to us, a couple removed a reserved sign and sat at the table, seemingly annoyed by our presence. I noticed one of the staff members warmly greeting and chatting with them, which made me suspect they were regulars. I encouraged my coworkers to overlook the situation so we could enjoy our celebration.
However, shortly after, a staff member approached us, asking if we were driving specific vehicles and insisting we move immediately in a very unprofessional manner. It was at that moment I realized we were no longer welcome, given the way we had been treated. I requested our bills and asked my staff to move their cars, trying to maintain our composure.
The couple next to us claimed they were regulars and always received the best service, which made me reflect on the stark difference in treatment we experienced. I expressed to the staff member that since our arrival, we had been treated differently. When I witnessed her friendly interaction with the regulars, it became painfully clear that we were being subjected to discrimination.
After settling our bill, we noticed the couple next to us reviewing it, which felt unacceptable. I made it clear to the staff member who had asked us to move that we were there to celebrate and had been made to feel unwelcome from the start. We chose their location based on positive reviews, but had to acknowledge it was not the right place for us.
I wanted to emphasize that, as individuals in the service industry, we found the service we received to be unacceptable and that we were leaving with dignity. It’s disheartening to realize that if you don’t fit the typical mold of a white patron, you might not be welcome at a place like this. As an American of Puerto Rican descent and a diverse staff this was the first time I truly felt the sting of racism, which should never be tolerated.
I would never recommend Lazy Oak Beer Garden to anyone in my staff, family, or to any guests who stay at our hotel. We pride ourselves on providing exceptional service to all our guests, regardless of their background, and this location fell significantly short of how to treat any individual with respect and...
Read moreGenerally, we really like this place, is a nice hidden gem only known by locals with decent food and nice selections of drinks, both kids and “pets” friendly (although with the state of the kids area I’m not so sure anymore), when the weather is good, we always enjoy going there and always recommend it to friends. However, this last time it was kind of sad to go there. We brought our current foster dog, which unfortunately is kind of a big guy with a loud voice. The place was ¾ “reserved” for 3:30 although there were like 3 of the reserved tables empty. The only table available was the one next to the indoor bar, we had our dog on the leash but unfortunately it kept barking at people going in and out. Now, I should have left the premises as soon as noticed the face of disgust of the waitress towards the dog, but me and my family were hungry and ordered right away. 3 times, 3 times people from the place came over and simply told us that “if the dog is aggressive, we ask you to leave, because is a liability”. I’m not asking for sympathy here, we waited for our food, took the dog quickly to the car and left as soon as we finished. I felt horrible and ashamed about the whole thing and for that I’m deeply sorry. Here is all that I’m asking and suggesting, just a better handling of the situation, first, please don’t look at us and the dog as if you were about to vomit (yes you know who you are), second if you are the manager or owner, please be more cordial: a simple check of the table should have let you know that we ordered food, so maybe a quick chat: "hey guys let me pack your food" (which by the way had the wrong order and cold, but that’s another story!), "...Hope you understand, but we have kids and adults here and the dog is barking too loud (I totally get it, it’s completely understandable), please come back any other time...", which somehow he did say, just with a “not with that dog” again making people feel like criminals...
I work in customer service, and I know that the client is not always right, like in this case, I should not have kept the dog there and for that I apologize. However, making the customer feel like trash is not right either. Just putting it out there for a better handling of the situation with other customers, if it...
Read moreWhen the weather is nice, a beer garden is one of the best places to be. With a cool drink, nothing feels better than the great outdoors, surrounded by the natural elements and, hopefully, good conversation as well. My love of beer gardens led me to check out Lazy Oaks Beer Garden, located in west Houston close to the Memorial City Mall.
Lazy Oaks Beer Garden has a neighborhood feel and is a chill type of place, with a long interior that features a bar along the back wall, high tables and low tables, and barstools along the edge of the bar itself. The stools at the tables don’t have backs and are a little less comfortable than I prefer, but the place to be is the outside beer garden. It’s larger than the interior space and features picnic table seating, television sets, and a partial covering just in case it starts to sprinkle or if you want some protection from the hot sun.
For beverages, Lazy Oaks Beer Garden is first and foremost, a place for beer. I counted about 23 taps the last time I visited, most of them Texas- brewed suds, but there are out- of- state options as well. If beer isn’t too your liking, never fear- they have a full- service bar and can mix up any drink you like.
The food served at Lazy Oaks Beer Garden is typical American pub fare, such as sandwiches, tacos, wings, etc. I find the food good overall, especially when consumed with beer. The fried chicken sandwich was a little more bready than I prefer, but the burgers are hearty and, again, a great match with a glass of local brew.
For parking, the immediate parking lot fills up quickly but keep in mind that there is extra parking space available across the street. The prices at Lazy Oaks Beer Garden are slightly less than at other, similar establishments, which is a plus. It’s not the prettiest place on the inside, but as a beer garden, Lazy Oaks Beer Garden works and it’s a place I will return to when I’m...
