I spotted this place while checking out Blue Onyx - I was leaving and noticed Luling City Market nestled between Blue Onyx and Bayou City Seafood. The other places are so large, this place is easy to miss if you weren't looking for it. My bf loves his BBQ, like any true Texan would, so when I told him about it, he wanted to try it for lunch the next day. Came on a Saturday during lunchtime and it wasn't busy at all - we walked right up to the counter and ordered what we wanted and were immediately eating. We tried the brisket, the pork ribs, the turkey and the sausage! Comes with bread, sauce on the table, and your choice of potato salad and/or cole slaw with a variety of different pickles! Nothing fancy about this place but they do serve traditional old school BBQ - what makes it old school? I asked my bf the same thing and he said the new BBQ is seasoned with a thick crust of black pepper and seasoning and this was different. Regardless, we both liked the bbq. The brisket was ok - not dry but a little less flavor on these compared to the other meats. The pork ribs were delicious - moist, fall off the bone, and seasoned well. The turkey was just meh - but it's turkey so I'm not going to judge a BBQ place by their turkey. Tasted a bit too salty and dry - more like a deli meat. My bf said the sausage was one of the best sausages he's ever had - it was the spicy jalapeno sauce and it tasted fantastic. I'm not usually a sausage fan cause it's usually overly greasy, but this one definitely didn't taste overly greasy. We both also loved the potato salad. The service was great and the owner came by to see if I needed a box for leftovers! Good local business with legit traditional BBQ, like they do in the good ol' days! We will...
Read moreThe barbecue was the worst yesterday (8-2-2020) as I was very disappointed with the meat I was served. The brisket was brittle and dry without any moistness to the meat. The same was true of the pork ribs I bought which was tough to chew, dry and hardly any meat on them. Also purchased 4 sausage links and they were black, over-cooked, tough to chew and dry and lacked flavor. All of the meat was a mess and I paid $60.00 for this along with the potato salad and pinto beans which were the only two items salvageable. I was concerned when I saw the links in the heaters as he opened it up to get my order and was close to asking if these were the only links available (them being black) but I didnt say anything. I bought them on the way for a small get together with family and all the barbecue was just terrible. Pappas bbq would have been much better as I've never experienced anything like this with them and they have family meal deals that cost less then the $60 I paid here (but willing to pay more when I've consider here a step above Pappa's). I should have walked out of there when I saw the links alone but these links should have never been served and thrown away with how poorly they were. I cant believe they did though and I come to Luling City Market because they were good in the past and it's the closest I can get to Luling/Lockhart Texas type links and barbecue without the trip. Wow, so very disappointed that I dont think I will ever return to Luling City Market again and never recommend to friends, family and others to go here as I've done in the past. I overpaid but it...
Read moreI ordered to-go ribs and sausage 30 minutes prior to closing time. Atmosphere inside the restaurant seemed subdued because not many diners were eating at 6:30 PM, I guess. Typical BBQ joint where diners order while standing in queue. SOME but not all serve staff doling food onto plates either don't speak English or they were apathetic to answer questions, and the prices are well above average yet the quality did not justify the price. Please be aware that the BBQ sauce contains mustard just like a South Carolina mustard-based BBQ sauce except that Luling's sauce is spicier. I like it; however if you don't like mustard then bring your own sauce. The only sides are potato salad, slaw and pinto beans; no corn, greens or other vegetables. Also the sausage meat is bland with minimal seasoning yet it's smoked thoroughly to flavor; would be nice to have well seasoned sausage to accompany great smoked flavor. No cheese inside the sausage (thank heavens). I also didn't see beer on the menu board, but the soft drinks are fountain style plus there is a small cooler behind the cashier with Big Red and Fanta grape and orange. There was a separate alcohol bar within the place so you may have to pay for alcohol separately. This meal was okay but didn't make my mouth water. It cost $50 for one person without dessert, which is a lot higher than I have been paying for decent BBQ in other places around the southeast...
