Atmosphere, awesome! Very welcoming in decor and staff! We got invited to go to a birthday lunch here and it was very pleasant! The staff knew our party's main guests and all the people that tended on us were so kind and inviting! I had to go to the restroom multiple times to take care of the baby and I loved how large the restroom was and it was easy to take care of the baby. Something that is always a big factor now that I have a kid is being able to clean him up and having space when I have a stroller. Space was great!
The appetizers were very delicious! My husband proceeded to eat nearly an entire tray of fried pickles on his own, which he loved. I ate some mozarella "stix", which were okay. Breading was alright but no marinara was served with it, which I thought was strange.
For our entrées, I got the chicken strip platter, which I didn't realize how much food I was getting with it! If you want to split it, get this size portion, but if not, get the basket version. It came with fries and an additional side (I chose mac and cheese so the baby could eat off my plate). You can choose honey mustard or gravy for dipping, and I didn't particularly like one or the other. I kept dipping back and forth. Mac and cheese is creamy and delicious, probably the best part of my meal. Chicken was not as salty as I would have liked. I got my fries loaded with cheese, green onions, and bacon, which was okay, but still not the best. My husband got the chicken fried steak, which is "5th best in the state" according to the menu. He said it was decent, and neither of his sides were up to his standards. He said most things lacked salt, which was his biggest problem.
Now, dessert. All I have to say is--YUM! The best part of our meal was the dessert, hands down. We got a blackberry cobbler and a peach cobbler, both were served with a scoop of bluebell homemade vanilla and that's the ONLY way to do it here in Texas. That cobbler I didn't want to stop eating! However, I was already so stuffed I was disappointed that I couldn't quite finish it. My husband devoured his peach cobbler so fast I almost didn't get to try a piece!
Overall, this place is very straightforward. It's Texas Southern Comfort Food. However, comfort food is filling and makes you feel sluggish and tired afterwards. I don't recommend eating it if you plan on going somewhere afterwards. We enjoyed going there, lots of lovely people, decent food, incredible dessert, and definitely hits the comfort food spot. It's not my favorite type of food so I'm unlikely to go back anytime soon since it was a bit of a distance from home. If you like good, Texas comfort food you'll...
Read moreMy son and I decided to try this place for the first time today. Overall, the food was just OK - definitely nothing to write home about. However, the young lady who took our order was such a sweetie pie, so if I could rate on service alone, I'd rate it a 5.
Now, back to the food: Both my son and I ordered the "Big Bubba" dinner, which gave all sorts of big back energy. I ordered creamy spinach and loaded mashed potatoes for my sides; my son ordered fried okra and mac and cheese for his sides, and we both ordered desserts (peach cobbler and key lime pie). Let's start with what was good: the chicken breasts on the bed of rice was good; my creamy spinach was ok, but not great; it was more on the soupy side, and the mashed potatoes were way too dry despite having decent flavor. My son said he enjoyed the fried okra, but he said the mac and cheese was not good at all; he said the pasta was a bit overcooked and the cheese sauce was bland. Now, on to the desserts: the peach cobbler was HORRIBLE!!! Whoever is making that (or buying it from the store) needs to be fired IMMEDIATELY!🤮 It was soupy; it lacked the flavor expected a good southern peach cobbler, and it was just so wrong. I ate two bites, and I threw it away. My son also said the key lime pie was bad and said he would rather have the store-bought Edward's pie, so basically, I wasted $14 on just the desserts.
In conclusion, the place is ok. Perhaps, there are other things on the menu that are much better, but based on my first experience, it is very unlikely that I will ever patronize this place again. Cooking at home would definitely be superior (if you're a good cook). Because I'm a really good cook, this place is a NO for me, but again, the young lady who took our order was a gem, and I pray the...
Read moreGood food at a good price, in a good location.
Pappy's carries American diner style food in a large and well decorated building. While the menu might seem like it is from a 24/7 diner the quality of food and service, as well as the location itself, is significantly better. The prices are very fair, and one can have a very satisfying meal for $20.
I had their fried steak with 2 sides and toast for all of $14. The baked potato was fine, hard to mess up a baked potato, and the slaw was crisp and not watery. The steak itself was well cooked and crispy. The meat was still juicy and not overcooked, but tender enough to easily chew. The breading was crunchy and not bland, with a mild sweetness to it. The gravy was a bit on the thick side, and has a noticeable sweetness which I personally wasn't too into, but which I can see many enjoying. Overall the plate was very satisfying in price, portion, and flavor.
The bar was also fairly well stocked, containing the major brands as well as a few higher end bottles. I'm sure they can whip up any of the common cocktails you would like. The bar also has large cubes of ice available if you prefer to sip on a finer dram.
The atmosphere was warm and friendly, with a nice homey charm to it. The restaurant is located just off the I-10 on the feeder near a few hotels, with plenty of parking. Pappy's is pretty easy to identify...
