Valentine's Day 2025
My date and I had a 7:45pm reservation and checked in a couple minutes early on Friday, February 14, 2025. The hostess told us that they were cleaning off some tables and seating would be available soon. There were at least 6 other couples waiting in the front area of the restaurant, maybe 8. It was a little tight to stand as servers frequented the area, traveling through with food and drinks. That's not a huge issue unless it's super-packed. Well, it was Valentine's Day, and it was super-busy.
We were finally seated in the upstairs section with 3 other couples. There were probably 7 or 8 couples upstairs in total at that point. We were seated and immediately heard complaints from a table that had been seated for a while. They mentioned that they "eat here once a week" and that this was easily the worst experience they've ever had at The Grill on Third. The server was really trying. She was stressed out, overwhelmed, and on edge. We both felt really bad for her.
We got our drinks and ordered the Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail for our starter. She brought us 2 rolls when she brought our drinks to the table, which took over 10 minutes. The rolls tasted okay, but I could've made the same thing by picking up a pack of Sister Schubert's. This is a fine dining establishment, so quality is expected. Once again, the server was working very hard, but they were overwhelmed and understaffed. The app was fair and nothing to write home about, and it was overpriced at $16. My date ordered the house wine but never got it. We didn't want to stress out the server even more and didn't worry about it. It was taken off the bill, which was appreciated.
My Caesar side salad was the best thing I ate, and this is a place that offers an array of steaks including ribeye, filet mignon, prime rib, and NY strip. I ordered the filet mignon, baked potato, and Caesar salad. They were out of baked potatoes, so I ordered the risotto instead. The risotto was not good. It was undercooked and did not have a good taste. My date ordered the ribeye. The ribeye was cooked fine, but it didn't have much flavor aside from a chargrilled taste. It tasted unseasoned. She had a side salad, which was fine, and asparagus. The asparagus was okay, but she was underwhelmed with the steak.
I need to mention that a few minutes before we got our food, another couple complained about the quality of their steak. The lady at the table said her steak was not the filet mignon she ordered. I didn't have the perspective, but my date said that they brought her out a proper filet mignon after she complained. She noticed the steak that was first brought out, and she said to me that it did not look like a filet mignon.
I received my "filet mignon" and immediately chuckled when our server put the plate down in front of me. I'm not an expert when it comes to steaks and types of meats, but I worked in grocery stores for the better part of 12 years and know a few things. This was not a filet mignon. It appeared to be a lower quality cut than a sirloin, but I am not entirely sure. It was cooked fine but nowhere near the quality of steak that it should've been. It tasted bland and wasn't good. It was taken off the bill, which we appreciated. The funniest part is when the owner tried to come up and tell us that this steak was a filet mignon. He was so convinced in his own narrative that the filet mignon was actually that. He wasn't mean or anything, just very convinced that this was a filet mignon. He mentioned having in-house butchers. That's cool and all, but it wasn't a filet mignon. He's had several area restaurants over the years, and I try to support as much local business as I can. I added a photo for reference. Overall, it wasn't a good experience. It was far from the worst experience I've ever had, but I won't be going back anytime soon. Maybe I'll try a sandwich in the summer. I will proceed with caution. Thanks for...
Read moreWhen they first opened the food and service was fantastic, but unfortunately since then it seems to have just gone down hill. While I understand food costs have skyrocketed for restaurants over the last few years, they appear to have taken it a step further than most places. The steak was flavorless (except for the char) and full of fat and gristle. It was also nowhere near a 12 ounce steak. It had clearly been thrown on and pressed to try and cook it faster (which doesn't work, just burns it which is what it did.) It was, as another reviewer noted, paper thin. Definitely not what they advertise or use to have. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time it's been like this, it was just our opportunity to give them another shot. Third one in the past 6 months. The spinach and artichoke dip was maybe two ounces spread thinly over the dish to appear as if it were a full portion, but obviously wasn't. But loaded with the most salty chips I've ever had which were also stale. The Chicken Parm tasted as if they just took tomato paste and spooned on top and heated it up. It was such a weird consistency and taste that I doubt my dog would eat it. The only good thing we had was the salad. We went on a Saturday around 7:00 pm and they were very slow. That isn't a good sign. Our server clearly looked at our food and noticed it hadn't really been touched much and gave a very nervous look and just asked if we wanted a togo box. We didn't. I didn't say anything as the table behind us was having issues and it was clear the server nor manager were able to fix and were having to make phone calls plus, I knew it was going to be our last visit. Every other restaurant in town appeared to be very busy, even our server said it had been slow all evening. It's unfortunate, but clearly the owners/management have given up on this place and it's evident from the slow decline. Needless to say, for the prices they charge, we won't be returning when there are too many other places to...
Read moreDec 1, 2022 My husband and I had dinner here on their first (soft) opening day. We were greeted by the hostess and taken directly to a nice cozy booth dressed with black linens. The bar caught my eye as we passed by. Beautifully designed and also had a cozy warm feel to it. Our waiter Kyle was very professional and attentive. The atmosphere gave a relaxing feel with the soothing ambience of the dimmed lighting. I had a couple glasses of the best white wine I've ever tasted called Bartenura Moscato D'asti. My advice...just buy the bottle because you WILL want more. My husband had the Third Ave Burger and Caesar salad and loved them both. The burger was quite a mouthful!. For my meal I chose the appetizer loaded potato rounds and a house salad. Both were amazing and more than I could eat. Not only was the food delicious, they do such a nice presentation when plated and they give nice portions. We don't usually get desserts after a meal but I had to try the mousse dessert. It really hit the spot! It was enough to share and was so lite that you didn't feel miserable after eating. And it was pretty. The owner stopped by our table a couple times to check how everything was and showed concern of aiming to please. This is very important to us as we are big foodies and dine out often. It shows appreciation and gratitude to their customers. I have read that some are scared off by the pricing. But if you compare them to other fine dining restaurants the prices are comparable and well worth paying. There are many places around town that are easier on the wallet but then you're getting just what you pay for. The food here is quality! And you CAN dine here and not break the bank if you want. We have reservations again Saturday, Dec 3, 2022 because there were so many items on the menu we still want to try. Lol I highly recommend. You wont be...
