The Human Bean — Restaurant in Indianapolis

I genuinely wish I could give this place five stars. The first time I visited, the service, food, and drinks were excellent—which is why I was excited to return and brought my fiancé after raving about it. Unfortunately, our second visit was disappointing due to a miscommunication with the staff regarding our order.

I requested two double shots of espresso in separate large cups over ice, each filled halfway with ice. I had to repeat myself several times, and when we reached the window, we were handed two small cups. I clarified that this wasn’t what we ordered and explained we had asked for large cups. One of the employees responded with an attitude, saying, “Then next time, ask for large cups,” to which my fiancé replied, “We did—multiple times.”

Thankfully, the issue was corrected at the window, and the cashier was polite. We even apologized in case there had been any confusion. However, the way the other staff member spoke to us really put us off from wanting to return. It seems the experience here greatly depends on which staff members are...

My wife and I were excited to see The Human Bean open in Lawrence, since we like to support local alternatives to big chains like Starbucks. Unfortunately, our experience was very disappointing. We ordered coffee, a sandwich, and a cookie (from a brand called Daisy, I believe). Every single item was poor quality — but the cookie in particular was one of the worst we’ve ever had.

To be direct, the food just isn’t good. We threw it an away. The coffee wasn’t enjoyable, the sandwich lacked flavor, and the cookie was almost inedible. I honestly think this is why the Lawrence location doesn’t get much repeat business. People try it once and don’t come back.

I don’t write this to be mean — I hope it’s taken as constructive feedback. If the owners and managers seriously reconsider and improve the menu, there’s a chance this location could succeed. But as it stands, we won’t be returning, and I imagine many others feel the same.

On their menu, it made it look like my drink would be about six dollars and they ended up charging me $9.25 and I had no modifications to my drink just the straight up drink! What a complete rip off!!!!!I will never be back!!!!!This was my first and last time!!!!!!You need to change your prices on your menu!!!!!

Also, the employee didn’t even tell me what the total was.
