We arrived on a Sunday night in late April around 830 pm. The food was enjoyable and tasty, as was the beer. I had the tenderloin sandwich and the Courtside Pale Ale and the Dragonfly IPA. The service looked like a Bar Rescue episode. We walked in, the hostess wouldn't even make eye contact with us and waited for us to flag her down to seat us. She still didn't even talk to us, we told her we had 4, and she grabbed menus and just started walking. We thanked her after being seated, still no words or eye contact. Our server, Rachel, started serving us and was noticeably tipsy already. Stumbling on the gravel and tripping over her words and thoughts as well. She started talking about how she was thankful she only had 3 tables now and that she had 6 a previous hour and that was borderline unmanageable for her, according to her. She informed us that the bartender was newer and she was not enthused by him. Both rounds of beer, we watched this newer bartender pour the beers, set them out for service, and then they took 10 and 15 minutes, respectively, to make their way to our table. No head left and already warming. Side note, one of us ordered a Vienna Lager and it had a prominent raspberry note? Pretty darn sure that was not the right pour unless large amounts of Barbe Rouge hops were used. Rachel would then disappear for long periods at a time; we assumed to drink a little but who knows? Once our food came out, we enjoyed it, but one of the orders (smoked pork poutine) was missing ingredients listed on the menu without explanation. No silverware or napkins were brought with the food. Rachel stopped by over 20 minutes later and my friend who needed silverware finally got to request some and the missing ingredients; silverware showed up about 10 minutes later and Rachel was basically drunk at this point. Not sure how many staff were working, but I highly doubt a manager was present (if so, they didn't care what was happening) and definitely not enough functional staff for the business they had (the space was well under a quarter full, so not busy by any means in my mind). Missing ingredients were requested again and showed up another 10 minutes later. At this point, my friend's food was cold so we requested a box and asked for the check. Both of those things actually came out in a timely manner. By the end, the comedy of errors was entertaining but also perplexing to us as we all work in alcohol or hospitality and couldn't understand how this was allowed.
TL;DR: food was good to great overall but incomplete; beer was good to really tasty but probably not what we ordered for one of them; service was a sketch comedy skit at best and a certifiable drunk mess at worst. We didn't feel like asking for corrections to all of our issues because we didn't think our server was coherent enough to fulfill them. We couldn't tell if other staff were drinking on shift but Rachel certainly was. I hope this was an off day for them. Pretty good atmosphere, at least. I'm not a local but I'm in town for several days and we won't...
Read moreI live about a street away from Upland so walk here weekly for food or to grab a beer with friends. Sometimes the service is friendly, other times it seems sort of stand-offish which has always been weird. But never too good or bad to leave a review one way or another. That changed after my visit a few Sundays ago.
The high that day was I think around 93. We got there literally right at 11, so just when they opened. We were the only people in the restaurant (came for brunch, although a morning beer aint always bad!) and asked if we could sit outside in the shade. We were brought to a table only about halfway in the shade and the hostess left, and we were a little disappointed because the sun was already making things uncomfortable. So after a minute (still being the only ones in the entire place) we got up and walked to a table that was completely shaded. Before we even could sit down, a lady comes over and lectures us in a pretty hostile way that "You can't just get up from your table! You can't do that, this isn't your restaurant! That's not how we do things! You know what? Whatever, I don't even care." And then she stormed away. Our whole party was stunned. What just happened. Our waitress was very nice but we could tell she felt uncomfortable with the situation (either with us moving tables or us getting yelled at).
Our whole party was fully vaccinated, but we wore masks into the restaurant regardless. During our visit we noticed plenty of patrons without masks. So when it was time to leave, we didn't bother putting our masks on for the very short distance around the hostess stand to exit the restaurant. As we were leaving, we could hear the same lady who yelled at us smirk behind our backs as she must have been talking to coworkers and said "These idiots don't believe in science I guess." She had to have known we could hear her. Well actually, we're fully vaxxed and following the CDC's health protocols (who, idk, probably knows more about science than Angry Upland lady). Every business has a right to require them but it was confusing as Upland's sign said to wear one "in accordance with local health regulations", and the regulations say no masks required for fully vaccinated individuals. Not the point, just didn't love being called an idiot. I would still recommend people check this place out, but just know that they have some very rude staff. And some very nice ones too.

Read moreI want to start with food is great beer is even better we typically love it here. Our situation was handled by the manager who did want to make things right but we did not get a new server which was all we wanted.I do want to leave a review on our experience with our server just for others to be aware and as a reminder that being kind goes such a long way. We had a rough day yesterday with a loved one in the hospital and quite honestly I needed a beer so wasn't prepared to deal with such behavior. It started with our beers were brought out and our server either didn't know or maybe someone else brought them over so when she came to the table with 2 more she was very angry we already had ours like oddly angry so my husband tried to make light of the situation and said hey you could have left em will be ordering another anyway and that was returned with a very rude response. We ordered our food we had our kids with us and normally they order on their own but this time since we were all kind of splitting food my husband ordered she rudely shut him up with they are independent ladies sir. So we're off to bad start my husband goes to the bathroom on his way back he sees on the board of beers at the bar there were 2 ipa's listed that weren't on the regular menu. Knowing I like ipa's he asks for samples to bring me they offer to also get him a beer he says no we have a table just wanted to let my wife try these mind you samples are free no money transaction happened at the bar. When our server saw the samples she yelled at us to only order through her thats how she pays her mortgage we tried to explain they were samples but she stormed off. So I'm sitting there on one of my worst days just in shock. Manager was lovely she did offer to take our beer off we declined because their was no problem with food or beer we did however want a new server and our same server returned to the table with an even worse attitude. The manager did apologize that she did not get the part we wanted a new server. I will come back but will walk right back out of the door if that server is working. I have never experienced being yelled at for ordering something...
