Very kind wait staff. We're greeted at the door immediately and asked to take a seat wherever we liked either outdoor or inside. Was a bit humid outside but they had the misters on even early in the morning which helped when the breeze blew our way. Tables were clean, drinks and further service was prompt. I don't remember the name, but my breakfast chips dish was unexpectedly great. The biscuits and gravy had a very unique sauce as well. The chorizo as a side was a bit different than I normally am used to eating, but being homemade it was good in its own way. Eggs were cooked exactly how we asked them to be as well. The country potatoes were cut in bite sized chunks but not really flavored much. That's the only slight hit for me. Again, the multiple staff who hosted us were very attentive with drink refills and checking up on us throughout, yet not very pushy or annoying even when it came time to pay the bill. The place just looked a bit old and partially under construction which is the only reason...
Read moreThe Cafe at Shields is probably the finest place for breakfast/lunch in the eastern part of the Coachella Valley. The menu is full of delicious and often unique items as well as some traditional meals with a twist.
I had the chicken and waffle, a traditional southern item. But at Shield's, it is served with spicy syrup that adds a zip you might not expect. The chicken is batter dipped southern style and is both peppery and a bit spicy. I suspect that the heat may come from the syrup. It is moist, very crispy and delicious. The waffle is good, but unexceptional of itself, but made outstanding with the "fire honey infused" syrup. The bacon, 2 long strips covered with syrup, was also excellent.
Don't be put off by the frequent "spicy" references. It is mild and particularly notable for its unexpected presence, not its level of heat.
Service at Shield's is always excellent and, on pleasant days, dining in the garden is a wonderful way to begin a day. On the rare bad day, inside seating...
Read moreThe Café At Shields is an absolutely excellent restaurant. Their prices aren't bad at all, with most options averaging anywhere from $10-$15.
Being on a date farm, their dates are very fresh, and delicious. They're semi-sweet, and very tasteful, but they aren't overwhelming. I ate their special Date Pancakes, and they were delicious. They use a special date butter they make in the pancake mix and it turned out subtle, but noticeable. My fianceé ordered the regular pancakes and they are just as delicious.
I highly recommend this restaurant if you're in town. Being it's the desert, the weather is usually pretty nice, and the restaurant is mostly outside in a sort of patio, but they do also have indoor seating in their little shop.
The shop has a lot of different eating goods, along with shakes, and their famous date shake. Even if you're just passing through town this is a great place to check out for breakfast,...
