Let’s start with the good stuff. Simply wholesome is my go-to for herbs, groceries, a midday, snack, and knowledge. Although I’ve seen this place since I was a kid, I stopped in back in 2015 because I have been suffering from stomach issues for about 10 years at the time or my adult life up to that point. I was told to grab “Lily of the Desert’s Aloe Vera Stomach Formula” and try that first. When I say that cleared up my Crohn’s disease and sent it into remission, I was blown away by the power of herbs. Since then, various herbs from Simply Wholesome have either cured or sent my ailments into remission, such as my occipital neuralgia, and sickle cell anemia. With that being said, I stop in quite often, almost daily even for items that I would ordinarily grab at Target or CVS.
Recently, I have fallen in love with the shakes and juices. Here are some of my favorites; A.M. Los Angeles (which reminds me of an orange Julius), the Berry Surprise, Peach Delight, my all-time favorite, The Ginger Karma, Detox Up, the Lip Smacka, Peaches and Cream, Peaches and Berries, and I follow that up with a chicken Jamaican patty.
This place is truly a jewel. No matter if you’re looking for herbs for your daily health, books for your knowledge, a midday snack/dinner, or Florida Water, Crystals & Palo Santo for your rituals, this place has it all. I can’t say enough good things about how knowledgeable everyone is on products that make you Heal instead of masking the symptoms.
Here’s the not-so-nice side. 99% of the people I’ve come in contact with are over the top, friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming. There’s one lady I encounter more than 50% of the time that I’m there and I believe she’s a manager on the store side. For some reason, she isn’t welcoming, warm, or friendly when it comes to me. I’ve seen her embrace others with a smile however, I can barely get her to speak to me. I’m so uncomfortable when I’m around her, I tend not to buy things from the store if she’s on the register. I’m not sure what that’s about. I come here for healing, be it physical, mental, or spiritual. I don’t expect everybody to be on their A-game every day, I just expect the same quality of service that the person in front of me, and the person at the rear of me is getting. Interactions that I’ve had with her have led me to only get stuff from the food side and go to other places to get my herbs, such as Shades of Africa in Long Beach.
I love supporting businesses like this, especially ones that have aided in my healing, however, I just want this woman to understand that we’re coming into your store for spiritual, mental, and physical healing, and the energy that that person is giving off can break our day, break our mood, or break that moment for us and we may not want to return. I’ll continue to support Simply Wholesome as they support me in where I’m trying to go in life, my physical goals, and my health goals. Thank you again this is a true gem.
I went back to Simply Wholesome a few days ago my previous review for a beverage, snacks, and a gift certificate. After ordering my food, I went to the store side to request the certificate and grab my items. The person who I was under the impression was the manager was friendlier however had someone else assist me. Perfect. When the new lady came to the register, she said "I know you, I read your Yelp review." A bit lost for words, I said "yea" and proceeded to check out. In my opinion, going out of your way to let me know you read about a troubled experience I had to heckle me instead of discussing, possibly offering an apology or just saying nothing at all isn't acceptable. I'm sure losing me as a customer doesn't matter to them and that's disturbing considering this is a place that promotes wellness.
Shortly after this exchange, I started to be harassed by fake profiles attempting to discredit my reviews. Instead of taking responsibility and talking it out, they took the inmature route. I'll never support this business or other small black owned business as it seems this is a...
Read moreI am from Ohio...tonight was my first visit to 'Simply Wholesome'. I was especially pleased with the quick service I received at the counter. I was ecstatic over the choices on the menu. SOOO many!!!! Everything sounded so good in writing that it was difficult to decide. The menu was vast!!! The girls at the counter were helpful with my final decision. After I expressed to them that I was in a black owned restaurant, and I expected more of a "soul food" type dinner. With this information they quickly referred me to a selection called "Simply Light". Nothing could have been better health wise, expense wise, and still a "soul food flair". Collard greens with a veggie broth base and perfect seasoning to keep the taste of the way 'we' love collards yet light with no pork or smoked meat...macaroni that is hard to describe yet excellent preparation, with no dairy yet "simply delicious...beans and rice, not mushy, not overcooked...yet could have been a dish served alone because of the seasoning and the ample amount...more than a side dish serving. The entree was made more than complete with the added chicken veggie patty which seems to be there specialty because they offered a nice variety of patties from veggie to fish including spinach patties , chicken patties bbq patties, etc.. I was so pleasantly full and even more SATISFIED!!! My granddaughter took me there because she is very "HEALTY DIET" conscious at the age of 24 and I am "good food" conscious at the age of 76. I have almost stopped eating out completely over the past 10 years. For Simply Wholesome to satisfy my dining out experience it has to be "Top Shelf" in every way...This is an AWESOME restaurant for any one's eating preference. I did introduce myself to the owner because I wanted to personally commend him on the food, the eating environment, the service, the appearance of my choice on a plate, and everything that was to be served hot was hot!!! I am the mother of Macy Gray and have dined almost ALL over the world...from Louisiana cuisine to Middle Eastern, and European...Simply Wholesome addresses deliciously any of my preferred menu choices NO matter where I have eaten. I do NOT eat out because other restaurant experiences are NOT completely satisfying and I cook better than all even those that I am OK and somewhat pleased. Congratulations to owner, chef, servers and the absolutely pleasant, professional, and helpful girls taking your order at the cash register. So seldom do we get the deserved experience of great customer service. These Young Ladies showed it ALL!to any customer as they napproached the counter to order food!! The restaurant and store were Quite busy on a Wednesday night at 8:30 Pm but they took the time to be helpful with a smile and a WONDERFUL attitude. They were the PERFECT example of young people who seem to value their position in the work place and know that customers are important to the business. I will certainly boast about this restaurant to my daughter, my DST sorority, my retired co-workers at Kent State University, my "STILL I RISE" book club, my church and my HUGE family in Atlanta who are always bragging about the many 'black-owned' restaurants where they eat in that city..."can't touch this"!!!

Read moreThis was my first time going to Simply Wholesome, I've been hearing about this place for quite some time. Whenever I tell someone "I'm Vegan", or the topic of vegan restaurants in Los Angeles is on the table, Simply Wholesome surfaces. Finally, I thought to myself, "I can try a new spot and quite possibly add it to my list of favorites". NOT in this case.
Upon arriving, I noticed the dessert case. Large pieces of individually cut cake in plastic containers far from aesthetically pleasing. The slices were sloppy, and the cake looked very dense and heavy. The restaurant was poorly lit, and it was unclear whether I should seat myself or go to the counter for help. At that point, my friend, who'd been there one time before, informed me to go to the counter to order and they'll bring the food to my table.
Initially, I was under the impression that the entire restaurant was vegan/ vegetarian. I believe it's safe to say that it's not completely vegan/vegetarian based on several items on the menu. Speaking of the menu, there was SO much to choose from but the layout was poor. The menu would be easier to read if there was a clear defining line between the carnivorous and the vegan/vegetarian selections. Everything just appeared to blend together which causes confusion when it comes to ordering.
I ordered the Simply Lite (greens, macaroni pie, rice & peas) with a spinach Jamaican patty, and an order of plantains. I ended up sending the Simply Lite back for a refund. The greens were bland and tasteless, even after I seasoned it with a little salt & pepper, there was no hope for the greens. The rice & peas were dry, and the macaroni & cheese pie was..."overcooked" and under seasoned as well. I'm not sure what people are tasting when they go to this restaurant but, my experience, on a scale from 1 to 10 was a 2. When is comes to Caribbean or West Indian cuisine, which is what this dish was listed under, there are certain flavors and spices one should use when preparing dishes. I am not sure if this was suppose to be a "twist" on this Caribbean or West Indian dish, but what I do know is that is was POORLY executed.
Instead, I ate 2 Jamaican patties, the spinach and cabbage. I didn't finish the plantains because they, too, were lack luster.
I want to give this place another try...maybe have a juiced drink or something but, the food COUNT ME OUT!
I will NOT recommend the food in this place to anyone.
The girls at behind the counter were nice, and I didn't have any problem getting my money back due to my unsatisfactory dish. The service was "Good" but the food...left a lot to be desired.
Not sure if anyone from the restaurant will read this but, I suggest revamping the menu and taking a second look and/or retraining the kitchen staff to prepare the food the way you intended for it to be...
