Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream Alton Square — Restaurant in Irvine

Update: This is a follow-up to my original 2-star review. I recently decided to give this location another try and I’m glad I did! This time, the experience was excellent. The ice cream containers were filled to the top with no empty space, and all four flavors we purchased were loaded with toppings and absolutely delicious. We’re very happy with the noticeable improvement in quality and will definitely be returning. I highly recommend this location to anyone in search of great ice cream! ———————————————————————————-

My family and I are big fans of Handel’s Ice Cream and have been buying from them for years. We were so excited when this location opened up across the street from us. We have gone to this location 8 times now. It is clean and everyone is friendly. However we have stopped going to this location because we have noticed that this location puts a lot less topping into their ice cream than other locations. At first, we thought maybe all the locations changed up their ice cream but we decided to go to our old location and it was packed full of toppings. Every time I’ve purchased from this location, the ice cream has been pretty plain with not a lot of extras in the ice cream. Also two of the times that we purchased ice cream, the bottom, half of the ice cream was completely empty and was only half full. I would love to start going back to this location, but I don’t feel like I’m getting my money worth so for now I will continue to drive further to a different location. Really good ice cream. Really bad staff. After having to wave my arms several feet in front of a worker's face to snap them out of their daze, they served me the most careless, sloppy package of ice cream you've ever seen! It was practically pouring out of the side! When I asked for napkins, they handed me napkins covered in the ice cream that had been pouring out.

Then, they tried to overcharge me, or more accurately, double charge me. They would have gotten away with it if they hadn't been acting so incompetent as to alert me. I asked for a manager who either didn't have the tools or training to confirm I had already paid when the other worker tried to charge me again. They insisted I hadn't paid but let me leave without paying (again).

The next day I looked at my bank statement and what did I find?! They had charged me and tried to charge me again! I will NEVER go to this location again! In a word,...

My family and I had an incredible time at this ice cream shop! I ordered the banana foster shake, and let me tell you—it was absolutely delicious! I can't even begin to describe how amazing it tasted; it was like a flavor explosion in my mouth! 🍌 My mom got a single scoop of the same flavor, and she loved it too.

Everyone else in the family opted for single scoops, and the portion sizes were impressively generous. My sister went for the salty caramel truffle and was thrilled with her choice, while my dad stuck with his all-time favorite, chocolate chip cookie dough. 🍦

Even as someone who's lactose intolerant, I took a lactate pill to survive the dairy, and it was totally worth it! I’d rate it a 10 out of 10 and highly recommend it to anyone who can enjoy dairy. The staff were fantastic—super friendly and helpful. 🌟 Definitely...
