The good thing is the salsa was actually pretty decent, BUT I'm from Arizona and spent my whole life living near the border, so I know mexican food and flavors at least fromthat regionof Mexico. I also know Ohio is really far from the border, and probably many people here wouldn't know the difference, so expectations werent super high but jeez the Mexican food here is not good if you are looking for the real deal. The sauce on the enchiladas tasted like it was made with tomatoes instead of chiles. Like tomatoe soup on enchiladas. I noticed many Mexican restaurants across Ohio have a strange tasting tomatoe like sauce that they use, but enchilada sauce is supposed to be made from chiles, like for example guajillo, ancho & arbol chiles. I don't know what I'm eating here. It's not mexican food. I also ordered a regular Margherita on the rocks. The server asked fresh or frozen. I said fresh and was very excited, and then he asked what kind of juice. This was very confusing because a fresh Margherita is made with fresh lime juice. He said they didn't have lime. My jaw dropped. The most basic, traditional, standard Margherita is made with Tequila and lime, sometimes an orange liquor is added. I just wanted a good middle of the road Tequila like Don Julio Blanco and fresh lime juice Margherita, so simple and basic and the server didn't understand what I was asking for, which is so crazy. It's like going into an American food restaurant and ordering a Hamburger and the server looking at you like you're crazy. I ended up with a strange Margherita, I don't know if the Tequila that I asked for was in there or not, couldn't taste it because it was filled with orange juice, tasted like a mimosa. I know there are many flavors and ways to make a Margherita, but seriously, a good Tequila and fresh lime, is so standard. I miss a good Margherita 😔. The carnitas was also very dry and stiff. Again, the chips and salsa were good, but it was a strange experience. It's right in line with most mexican restaurants here, so it's not terrible if this is what you're used to but if you are used to real authentic mexican food, this isn't the place so save your money. The atmosphere was enjoyable though and the staff were friendly so if you're not super familiar with mexican food, it very well may be a good enough experience for you. I would recommend to the owners using a real chile sauce and getting lime juice for traditional Margheritas at...
Read moreTlaquepaque was a frustrating restaurant to rate as the highs were really high and the lows were really low. So let's start out with the good. First off their chimichanga was amazing and I've got to say it was probably the best chimichanga that I've ever eaten. I loved the richness given to it by the fresh guacamole. Also, the wait staff was excellent as well as the general atmosphere of the restaurant. The restaurant was clean and was just a fun place to enjoy a meal. On the other hand, they served some over cooked and stale tasting tortilla chips and the salsa was so so at best. I really believe to be a great Mexican restaurant you've got to serve outstanding chips and salsa and Tlaquepaque hasn't mastered that art. A tortilla chip should be light and crispy not heavy and burnt tasting. Also, I love the Mexican restaurants who serve their tortilla chips warm which attests to their freshness. Bottom line, Tlaquepaque is a solid Mexican restaurant.
Note: my wife gave me a taste of her chili rellennos and it wasn't very good. The pepper was only stuffed with pepper jack cheese and was an extremely unbalanced bite. The richness of the cheese took over everything. They were heavy handed with the pepper jack and should have stuffed the pepper with other items to balance out the richness of the cheese. The over abundance of cheese made...
Read moreI came here with my boyfriend tonight and we waited 10 mins in line, which is fine, we get a table outside, wait about 12 minutes before my boyfriend decides he’s getting antsy so he goes and asks the hostess politely where our server is, she says she wasn’t sure where our server was and that she’d send someone over to take our drink order, he said thank you and he went back to the table. She came over a few minutes later and took our drink order, (a water, margarita, and we also asked for chips and queso/salsa) our actual waiter eventually comes over with waters, asks again for my boyfriends drink order (the margarita) then returns with a cup of queso and his margarita, & takes our food order. We then proceed to wait about 15 more minutes with no chips, and a cup of now cold queso before we called it quits, especially after hearing a woman at the table behind us tell the waiter that a piece of her shrimp in her salad is raw. (We are never bad tippers, and are patient but this was just ridiculous). We end up going to hostess station, tell her our situation and that we would just like to cancel our food order and pay for the margarita and cup of queso that we didn’t even touch, wait 5 more mins before getting a receipt, pay, and leave. First and LAST time ever coming here 😖 So sad especially after hearing good things...
