Not really sure what the place is - outside of a bar that serves food. We walked in and the man at the front said go sit and someone will get you. (No 'hi' or any welcoming words)
We were there to try the beer cheese soup. It was not beer cheese soup- I'm from Wisconsin and know what beer cheese soup is - the Germans brought it to Wisconsin and that's where it became what it is today.
This place served the soup in a 'paper' or cardboard disposable bowl (cheap move). It was basically chicken/beef broth over shredded cheese almost as if it wasn't finished. Not a lot of thought put into it. It had rubbery pieces of bacon in it and we could see the shreds of cheese in the soup.
Traditional beer cheese soup does not have bacon in it, we put bacon crumbles on top to avoid that chewy, rubbery feel. The soup should be creamy with a smooth texture, hint of beer - and not smoke flavored.
The pretzels were not homemade - I have purchased the same brand at local stores from the freezer section. The pretzels were a bit burned on the bottom.
Neither of us finished and went elsewhere to eat (we did pay for it but wasted our money).
We did have a nice waiter. I asked about the 'classic' Rueben on the menu -he told us it's not even made on rye - (I said - then it's not a Rueben!) He agreed but did tell us that it can be made on rye for an up charge. OMG
The waiter told us that they make us pay upfront - on the way out - so they can try to sell us on bakery. We just weren't interested.
This is a bar. It's not a German restaurant- I'm not sure what you would classify the food as. Maybe it's popular because people drink and when they eat their taste is off??
They have a polish sausage sandwich with corned beef - sounds so weird.
We have frequented many German, Polish, Irish and European restaurants and this is not on our list to return- it's almost missing a food identity. Maybe if they narrowed down their menu and picked like a few sandwiches it would be OK but they'd have to get their sandwiches right. And fix the beer cheese soup, then serve it in a real bowl...so maybe they could try to bring in new customers.
I get they've been around 40 years but I've been going to Jacksonville for 50 and have never heard of them or had anyone tell...
Read moreHad a middle of the road experience here tonight. Turkey Parisian sandwich - pretty good except for the boring school cafeteria-style shredded lettuce. A solid piece of romaine would maybe fix this. The chips that come with the sandwiches are just generic ruffle chips from the grocery store. Nothing special about them. We ordered a tempeh reuben, then a few minutes later (after paying) they told us there was no tempeh, so we went with something $2 cheaper but they didn't offer to comp or refund the difference. We had to go back in and ask (which puts us in an uncomfortable position of asking for the $2 back.. no one wants to be 'that guy' Lol) this should have been caught and taken care of by the cashier/hostess, and not on us to have to ask. Where things really went wrong was the cake and the cookie.. they both tasted like freezer burn. I'm guessing the refrigerated display case they're in needs to be deep cleaned. The snickerdoodle really absorbed the nasty stale fridge/freezer flavor. It was so bad we threw the cookie away after we each took one small bite. The lemon cream cake didn't absorb the nasty flavor AS much, but it was definitely noticeable. I ate the whole slice so it was edible, but I still have the freezer/fridge taste in my mouth. Also, the cake was on the drier side... like it had been sitting out uncovered for a day or two. Pretty disappointing. Hopefully they pay more attention to the QC of...
Read moreWe had lunch on Sunday April 10 at the beaches location and the service was not up to restaurant standards our server took our order and we hardly saw her again. We had to finally ask our busboy for Togo boxes. The portion on our appetizer was weak not even enough for two people. Now here is the kicker, my husband and I are handicapped and my husband has had a stroke. When my husband and I got up to leave I had to wait in line to pay for our food so my husband went ahead to the car. While waiting in line a woman came in from outside and asked the girl at the counter to call 911 and to please call out my name over the intercom so as I could come outside to his aid. He had accidentally fallen in the parking lot and needed help which I was unaware. I went out to help and got him in the car but when I went back in the restaurant to ask why my name was never called or as to why no one called 911 to see if he needed medical help they acted like it wasn’t there responsibility to do anything. When I got upset at there attitude a male server came up to me and told me to get out of the restaurant. I will never go back to European Street again and my advice to anyone who may be physically challenged or a little aged to beware! I’m so thankful that it wasn’t any worse with my husband only a few scrapes...
