We were excited to eat at J22, however our experience was less than expected. We arrived on the early side to assure ourselves good service and a full menu. We were met by our server/bartender/maitre’d and things went south from there. He was a bit like a drill Sargent , polite but tough; We never felt the warmth of the server or the chef who was cooking behind the bar in the open kitchen. Our sever seemed not to listen to any of our requests....ordered two orders of 1/2 dozen oysters and one order of 1/2 dozen littlenecks and didn’t receive all the oyster that were ordered, albeit, they were delicious. Asked about the specials for a second time as the first time the drill sergeant fired them off too quickly for us to digest. Each time he barked out one of the specials, he asked “ did you get it “...this went on for the entire rendition of the specials and food items that were not available on the menu at the 5:30 hour....Next I asked about the clam chowder as I overheard him tell a customer something about the chowder being a clear broth...Our drill sergeant explained to me that it was indeed a clear broth and I told him “no thanks”...well, shortly thereafter it arrived in front of me. Next my wife indicated that she didn’t want the extra calories and asked that her Cod some without the mashed potatoes and please add extra vegetables. He said he would accommodate her...the meal came with mashed potatoes and a very small portion of vegetables. I ordered blackened fish tacos and the tortillas were so flimsy that you couldn’t pick the taco up or cut it. The tortillas just fell apart and looked like dead soldiers on my plate...Not once did the drill sergeant ask if everything was alright. The wine list was on a chalk board and indicated the price of wine by the glass. Our drill sergeant Indicated , when asked , that the bottle price could be determined by multiplying the the price of a glass by 4 and then subtracting around 4 or 5 dollars...Wow...he wanted me to do his job...Bottom line, the restaurant could be outstanding but it lacked real service and everyone who worked there looked unhappy like it was a chore that I was there ...Hope things straighten...
Read moreWe returned to J22 on our annual anniversary visit to Jamestown, and were very disappointed.
Not sure what has happened to this place. We loved it last time--the food, the service, the ambiance. I was especially excited that the owner makes her own catsup and never uses Canola. But this time we didn't see her, and we were disappointed in our two experiences.
We started our Saturday dinner with onion soup and stuffed clam appetizers. The soup was excellent--although $8 for a shallow bowl, with no crock pot of the usually goodies on onion soup was a bit steep--but the stuffed clams, 6 very small shells with mostly breading, were extremely disppointing, especially for whopping bill of $62 for these two appetizers and a single bread pudding (enjoyable), and one beer. For the same money, we could have had much better food and service at Bay Voyage Inn.
Given that last year, we loved the place, we gave it another try on Sunday, and this was even more upsetting. We stayed away from the clams, and ordered an appetizer portion of homemade tortellini with bolognese--very good (should have gotten the full-sized entree, so we were still hungry so ordered the salmon bites. These were okay. The drizzled teryaki sauce very sparse, no other garnish--like an Asian salsa, maybe, and again, pricey for the portions. But the real problem this night was the service. Our server could hardly manage a smile, and when we asked to see the menu again for the salmon bites, I think she may have rolled her eyes. We heard her chatting with another anniversay couple (she didn't know it was ours), and so we knew she was capable of friendliness. But, frankly, spending another $50 plus on, two appetizers and a beer, with unpleasant service, and no ambiance, was a mistake we won't...
Read moreMy father and I visited this restaurant Friday night. I am a physician in at a local hospital in the community and my father had not been to this area before. He had just got off the airplane from New Mexico and we went out to dinner to celebrate his arrival. After 9:00pm on Jamestown Island there are very limited food selections. We sat down at this restaurant, served by a waitress named Cat. We asked what the specials were and what the drinks were and she proceeded to point at a distant menu on the wall, on the other side of the restaurant. My father is a bit older and it has poor eyesight and when he asked if she could read she laugh at him and walked away. I was so furious I couldn't contain myself but because there were no other restaurants in the area decided pick my battles. She returned and my father again asked another question related to beer, if there is a beer menu and she laughs at him and said you need to look at the bar and walked away. He got up and walked over the bar and she approached him and said what are you doing and laughed at him. He told her, I just got off the plane from New Mexico and I'm tired and need assistance with the menu. I've been many restaurants around the world I've never met such a horrible person working as a waitress. On the positive compliments to the chef I order the salmon it literally was the best salmon I've ever had. honestly if I was the chef I would fire that waitress because his food deserves a much better server. The salmon was perfectly moist crisp on the outside oily on the inside wonderful. It was an absolutely awful experience for my dad and he walked away...
