Absolutely Disgraceful Experience at Black Bear Diner on Hwy 290/FM 1960 – Customer Service at Its Worst
If I could give zero stars, I would. My recent visit to Black Bear Diner on Hwy 290/FM 1960 was, without a doubt, the most appalling dining experience I’ve ever had. The service was atrocious from the moment we arrived.
Our waitress took our order, and when I politely asked if the coffee was fresh—a reasonable question since many establishments don’t brew fresh coffee throughout the day—she immediately got an attitude. She brought the coffee with creamer but didn’t provide a spoon or anything to stir it with, then disappeared without checking back. We had to flag down another waitress because we saw our food just sitting in the window, getting cold. We asked her to confirm if it was ours and to bring it out since our own waitress was nowhere to be found.
When the manager finally came over—at the end of this frustrating ordeal—they casually dismissed our concerns, saying, “Oh, we have runners on the weekend to do that.” Well, clearly, the runner didn’t do their job either. And for the record, does the runner also come back to check if we need refills on water or utensils? No—that’s the waitress’s job. One of the waitresses threatened me as if she wanted to beat me up or shoot me or something. nobody said anything to her I am contacting corporate. I know they won’t do anything either, but maybe they should know.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, when I expressed my frustration, the cashier had the audacity to tell me, “You shouldn’t speak to people like that.” Excuse me? After receiving rude, dismissive, and downright negligent service, I’m the one being corrected for expressing my valid frustration? That was the final straw. Instead of addressing the horrible service, they chose to lecture me on how to respond to it. The nerve!
I left feeling angry, disrespected, and completely baffled at how an establishment can operate with such a lack of professionalism and accountability. If you value basic human decency and competent service, stay far away from this location. Black Bear Diner should be ashamed to have their name attached to such disgraceful...

Y’all, if you’re not requesting DeeDee as your server at Black Bear Diner, what are you even doing with your life? Walked into this cozy bear-den of a spot on a random Friday craving some of that legendary chicken-fried steak and bottomless coffee, and boom – DeeDee swoops in like a force of nature. This woman doesn’t just wait tables; she commands the room with the kind of no-BS energy that makes you sit up straight and order that extra side of hashbrowns just to keep her chatting. First off, the service? Lightning-fast without feeling rushed. She remembered my group’s quirky orders (gluten-free for one, extra gravy for the rest of us heathens) like she’d been mind-reading our table all morning. Spilled a splash of OJ? Gone in seconds, with a wink and a “No worries, darlin’ – accidents happen to the best of us.” But it’s not just efficiency; it’s that badass vibe – tough as nails, zero tolerance for nonsense, but with a grin that could melt the iciest diner mood. The food? Solid as always – massive portions of comfort grub that hits like a warm hug from Grandma after a long day. But DeeDee elevated it: Dropped knowledge on the best hidden menu hacks (pro tip: ask her about the “Bear’s Secret Scramble” add-ons) and kept the refills flowing like she personally brewed the pot. We were a rowdy crew of two, laughing too loud and lingering way past our welcome, and she handled us like a pro wrangler – refilling waters, cracking jokes about our bad puns, and even tossing in a story about outlasting a snowstorm shift that had us all in stitches. Look, Black Bear Diner’s got the rustic charm and hearty eats nailed, but servers like DeeDee? She’s the spark that turns a good meal into a “hell yeah, I’m coming back next week” memory. Tipped her heavy (and deserved every penny), and if you’re reading this, management: Promote this woman to diner royalty. DeeDee, you’re a legend – keep slaying, queen! Would I recommend? Abso-freaking-lutely....
Read moreI went in today with a friend who had never been there before, and I felt embarrassed. The service was ok, but the food was horrible. First, we asked about the Prime Rib special, which came with 2 sides and a soup, we were told that the soup of the day was potato soup, which my friend and I were happy about.
Now comes the bad part, when we got the soup they were cold and had a fishy taste to it so I put it to the side and wait for our waiter, while waiting our food came and we were very disappointed the Prime Rib was cold, my friend and were upset so I went and asked for a manager who came over and tried to help but she informed us that there was no manager there or at anytime in the evening just a lead, we'll we started by telling her about the soup and we were informed that the soup was clam chowder and not potato soup and that their soup cooker was malfunctioning, that is why the soup was cold as for the Prime Rib since one was medium rare and one rare, we were told that they were supposed to be cold and if we wanted they could pop them in the microwave...I just could not belive they said that..we were both hungry since we had been out all day at the clinic so they told us the other option would be putting them on the grill, well we sent them back they were grilled my friend passed on the soup and I got a salad, when I got the salad it was just put together quickly and when he bought it to me some lettuce fell on me and he did not apologize plus by this time my drink was empty and it took me flagging down someone to get a refill, my friend had ordered a meal to fit later and when one of the servers brought it out the way he was holding it it was lopsided and I had to fix it for my friend who is partly blind. The meal was close to 80.00, and she was nice enough to take off 14.00, but after my friend purchased some dessert to go and tip, it was still close to 80.00 again. I believe this will be my last time coming here if the customer service and the food quality have gone down this much, and it seemed like the lead and server did not care....
