Was excited that a ramen place closer to home opened up. There is Ramen Bar by Hajime down the street, but a little further away than Aku, so I was hoping Aku would be decent to save myself from the far drive to Umaido or Jinya or Hajime. Unfortunately, service was awful. I was seated for 20 minutes and the server didn't bother to get me water or ask if I wanted a drink. My husband came and I ordered the Naruto Ramen and he ordered their daily special of Spicy Tonkatsu Black Ramen. We also ordered the seaweed salad. Server messed up on my order (he brought a completely wrong dish of Udon instead of what I ordered). So I had to wait another 10-15 minutes for my correct order to be made. My husband finished his food by the time my dish was brought out. The ramen broth was salty and the noodles lacked substance. Nothing special about the noodles or the dish. Our appetizer of seaweed salad came in last after I got my correct order of ramen. I really wanted to like this place, since I love ramen and the location would make my life easier. But I would not recommend at all or go back. Save yourselves the...
Read moreIt's a good 3 stars. For a fairly slow night, the service was a little lacking in no part due to the server. She was hustlin'. I suspect they had an unexpected rush. Still, they were quite friendly and apologetic. I didn't pick up any sense of "racist restaurant owner" vibes especially considering the crowd was pretty diverse.
The sake menu is very limited. You have a choice of hot, cold, or cloudy. I wouldn't recommend the cold. For $7, I guess it was about what I should expect -- mediocre.
Got a bowl of tantanmen ramen which had a great, lightly spicy flavor profile. They don't offer a selection of noodles -- thin, thick, wavy. You just get thin which is not my favorite. I had the gyoza combination. Nothing to write home about.
It was okay but not enough to go out of my way. There are better ramen shops around, but if you're with mixed-palate company and someone else wants sushi, Aku would...

Everyone ordered a different ramen. My vegetarian friend was amazed with the veggie ramen, my spice loving husband LOVED that you can customize the spice level of any ramen, and me being very sensitive to spices asked for "a low level." I will remember next time to say put NO spice in my ramen! Holy cow it was spicy for me! But I'm notorious for being a spice wimp.
We also tried the BBQ sushi, I highly recommend trying this! It was an amazing combination that I haven't really seen anywhere else. Very savory and somewhat sweet, just like BBQ should be! I will definitely be making this place my go-to ramen shop in the...
