Varsity is a popular BBQ/party joint in Kannapolis. It's conveniently located just off 85, and off one of Kannapolis/Concord's main parkways. I grew up in Concord, and my Mom has often frequented this place.
So, let's begin!
The restaurant has it's ups and downs. The food is competitively cheap, but in recent months I have heard tell of their BBQ quality going a bit downhill. Some of my family members and friends in that area have been telling stories of getting sick. However their cooking facilities and food are up to DOH standards, and they are regularly inspected, as the law requires. Varsity has a lengthy history in the area. I remember going there when I was a boy, and I'm 21 now. The methods of payment are a bit archaic by today's standards, with cash being favored. Though there is nothing wrong with this, paying 50 cents extra for using a credit card is a bit of a turn off for the average consumer, Especially when you are just buying a delicious cup of their generously scooped ice cream, which costs a very sensible $1.50.
From a personal standpoint I have always enjoyed the meals I have had there. It's mostly burgers, sandwiches, BBQ, and the normal American selections. I'm going to rate this restaurant a very good 4/5. The food is cheap, delicious, and they have some of the best desserts in the area. The extra fees for using a credit ($0.50) or debit ($0.15) card are a bit unsavory. But the minor inconvenience of having to carry around physical money, and local hear-say stories are no reason to stay away from some of the best...
Read moreI have went a total of 4 times and ordered 3 different items and I am slightly disappointed with the overall service and food. The first time I went I ordered chicken tenders with fries also I asked for seasoning on the fries. The chicken tenders were pretty good and not the processed chicken. The fries were hot (not seasoned) but the ranch saved it. I went back again a couple days later to try something different and tried the double cheeseburger all the way with fries. The cheeseburger wasn't really good it wasn't seasoned and kinda soggy. Also, my fries taste microwaved or refried they were cold by the time I went home (6 minutes away). I assumed they were busy and probably left my food out I waited a little over 15 minutes but the service was great. The third time I tried the cheeseburger and fries again hoping for a better taste than cookout. And unfortunately the burger was soggy and the fries were refried or microwaved. The drive through kid made it obvious she didn't want to be there and she also forgot the ranches. The last time I ordered chili cheese fries and requested if possible could they put the fries in a separate plate. The drive thru cashier said yes they could. I thanked and tipped her. I waited about 12 minutes in the drive thru just to get home to realize I had chilli cheese fries in the same plate with soggy fries and no ranch. That was the last time. It wasn't horrible but there could definitely could be some improvement...
Read morePretty disappointing overall, tbh. Had high hopes considering they catered for a friend‘s event, but it fell way short.
Barbecue plate was FULL, so you’re definitely getting your money’s worth, but the quality of it didn’t match. The meat was tender, but zero flavor. Couldn’t even tell if they smoked it or not, or however they cook it. The white slaw was dry, which is surprising considering its SLAW. Fries were fries, and hush puppies were good.
Called right when they opened and was told it would be 10-15 minutes, but it ended up being 30 minutes. Not appreciated for my lunch break lol.
Staff was friendly upon pickup and there were already a few tables inside, but I don’t anticipate on returning. Cost was a little more than what’s listed on their FB, but it’s nice to see they haven’t jacked up their prices too much in the...
