So, I have been hearing about a new Chinese place that has recently opened on Barry Road. In fact just last evening I saw some pictures posted in the KC Eats Facebook forum of some delicious looking food that they served during lunch. So, I decided to investigate!
In a small strip mall, nestled between the Honey Baked Ham Café and Pier 1, sits a place called Chopstix. It is actually in the old Malay Café space. The owners of this place have taken a lot of pride making this small space work. When you walk into the entry way you are greeted by some wood stained shelving holding a vase and some figures. The walls are covered by a variety of decorations and artwork. The various shades of brown of the tables and wood trim on the walls, along with the cream color and gold accents on the walls, and the soft glow of the lights, gives one a feeling of welcome, warmth, and comfort.
And then there is the food! They have an extensive menu of Soups, Appetizers, Fried Rice, Lo Mein, Egg Fu Young, Beef, Pork, Shrimp & Fish, Chicken, and dumplings. There is also a list of Chefs Specialties.
Finding a place to sit, I start to study the menu. Making my decision, I ordered a Pork Egg Roll appetizer and for the main course Kung Pao Shrimp. "Spicy" Shrimp sautéed in a rich brown sauce, with dried hot peppers, peanuts, diced bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, and baby corn. After a short wait they brought me the Egg Rolls, golden brown and crispy, piping hot and full of pork! A very nice way to start a meal. Then came the Kung Pao Shrimp. Piled high on the plate with steam rolling off it and loaded with shrimp. I popped a shrimp in my mouth and gave it a taste. Perfect! Tender and delicious the brown sauce and the mild heat of the spice was a perfect compliment. I did not leave hungry.
Well Done Chopstix!
Well Done Indeed!
P.S. Last night on KC Eats there was a discussion on why there were pickles on some of the plates. So, I asked my waiter and this is what I was told: In traditional Chinese cooking, that uses a lot of oil, pickles are always placed on the plate as an aid in digestion and to...
Read moreMy experience here was to say the least, a disaster. I ordered through their online ordering service, Menufy.com. They in turn used DoorDash for their delivery service. I placed my order at 2pm, the restaurant gave my order to someone, it was claimed to be the wrong dasher but since DD was unable to reach this supposed dasher, and if that were the case then someone else would also be getting the wrong order, so for all we know it could have been someone posing as a dasher to steal a free meal. My dasher who tried to intervene on my behalf but the store did not want to remake my order, she was removed from my order, DD resubmitted my order and at 3:30p I finally got my food from a restaurant that is 4 miles away.
As far as the food goes:
The Fried Dumplings were a weird pink color and were soggy, they didn't taste bad but I have definitely had better
The Egg Rolls were very small, two of them were smaller than one that I would get at home in New York. They also tasted more like vegetable rolls instead of pork egg rolls.
The Fried Rice was not Fried Rice. While it may have spent some time in a wok being fried, to call it “Fried Rice” is a stretch. It was plain rice with a brownish tint a tiny bit of egg, and no pork or vegetables.
The Garlic Chicken was OK but the use of zucchini & celery over other more traditional chinese vegetables such as sugar snap peas and bok choy which was a questionable choice.
And I ordered a 20oz bottle of Pepsi, for which I was charged $2.50, what I got was a 12oz can of Starry, Pepsi's poor version of Sprite. Either way I got half of what I paid for.
All in all this food was not at all worth the $44 spent. And the inclusion of a “Convenience Fee” is an insult. But since I am stuck in a hotel with no means of transportation I just plain got screwed.
I don't know how this place gets 4.4 stars, but I would not...
Read moreI cannot say enough about how tasty the food is here at Chopstix, and how vegetarian friendly as well! Chopstix is the FIRST and ONLY restaurant I've found in Kansas City that offers Vegetarian Dumplings (steamed or fried). They're also the ONLY restaurant I've found to offer General Tso's Fried Tofu. This was my absolute favorite Chinese dish before I stopped eating meat so I am thrilled to find a vegetarian version. Not only that, I requested to add extra vegetables and the server taking our to-go ordered modified a different dish that already contained many vegetables to add the General Tso's Fried Tofu. It was a perfect blend and exactly what I was looking for.
My partner got the traditional Sesame Chicken and was very happy with the portions. We also got a side of Lo Mein, Vegetarian Fried Spring Rolls, and Crab Rangoon. Everything came out so fresh and hot! Our server was so sweet, and she was right when she warned us how much food was coming. We ate on it for days! Chopstix also offers a Japanese fusion to their menu so you will find fresh sushi made to order in-house. We will be back to try the sushi another day and now we have some favorite go-to dishes to have again soon. Very pleasant first experience and would...
