My partner and I are regulars and ordered food from Uber eats. The food my partner received had a piece of metal in it. We are still waiting to see if there was anything ingested. After calling the restaurant, because we are concerned if anyone else was affected, we were told that we would be accommodated but we were asked to bring the food back in order to be accommodated. My partner explained to staff that we don't own a vehicle and we'd be catching Uber. Staff insisted we come in to be accommodated. When we got to Gates, staff was rude. One staff member tried to offer us a redo on food, which we didn't want. We didn't feel safe to eat more food from this location after there was metal in the food. Staff scrambled around for a manager. The manager initially didn't come out directly, she sent staff to communicate. Staff informed us that the manager was working on a refund manually. After waiting 30 minutes, the manager said she couldn't manually give us our money back. We were told to call Uber and speak with someone again after my partner took photos and emailed a representative with Uber, prior to us getting to Gates. Uber was only able to credit some of the total and Gates gave money out of the register for the difference. Now here's my review... After someone has told you they found metal in their food from your restaurant, asking them to expend more labor and money to be "accommodated", really sounds like you don't believe the person is telling the truth. As a courtesy, we humored Gates by coming in, when we already have to deal with the possibility of ingesting metal. This is a food safety issue and there should have been an inspection of food products to ensure that no one else is in danger. They should have stopped serving food but the parking lot was full of cars and people inside still eating. If there was the slightest bit of irritation coming from us as customers, it's rightfully so because Gates made the mistake of allowing dangerous objects to fall into the food, not us. As a courtesy, we showed kindness where we didn't have to. A full refund should have been given in cash for the inconvenience of also having to come to Gates and spend extra money to not actually be accommodated. Upon leaving the restaurant we ran into some folks who also experienced having metal in their food. So, this isn't the first instance which is why inspections should also be...
Read moreMy white self and my black wife drove four hours to come to this location because we were told it was the best BBQ in Kansas City. Despite the staff's best efforts to ruin our experience the food was actually pretty good. We did not let the fact that the front cashier and the rest of the racist staff acting like they would just as soon us go somewhere else deter us in any way. Two black gentlemen came in and were seated just 5 minutes after we were. Of course they were tended to by the waitress within seconds. She did not give us the attention she gave so freely to the other table. In fact, if we wanted something I had to get up and find out or get it myself. I watched the waitress welcome entire black families, tend to them and make sure they were seated and orientated. Meanwhile me and my wife had to tell the front cashier it was our first time at least five times with her acting like either she did not hear us or that she didn't care. The staff did not help orientate us in any way. The cashier just kept going on about how it was between shifts and how hard she had to work. A customer standing in front of the counter actually had to recommend the sampler plate. I requested a bowl of beans and the cashier very sloppily ladeled it into a bowl with sauce running down the sides and everything. Apparently presentation means nothing. We sat down and I wondered what I had to do to request more sauce. I finally got up to find the waitress was inside the little train area eating food. I'm not sure but I don't think waitresses are supposed to be eating food while they're on the clock. Especially when there's customers to be tended to. But what do I know? The only reason I gave this place 1 star was that the food was somewhat decent. But if this is the best representation Kansas City has to offer maybe y'all need to vote in a new Mayor or something. But anyway, we are taking our happy mixed selves back to Dallas never to darken the doorstep of this blatantly racist restaurant ever again. And we will warn everybody we...
Read moreMy family is visiting from Houston for a volleyball tournament. We are foodies and enjoy dining at the local renowned eateries. My wife and I wanted a place we could run back to Texas and rave about. In our quest for KC bbq we were told Gates was the place to enjoy. With no hesitation we hailed an Lyft and made our way to Gates only to be deeply disappointed on multiple levels. Our initial contact with the waiting staff was cold and tired. The young lady we had contact with had a crass attitude and displayed poor customer service. The staff was insensitive to us as visitors. Coupled with our unfamiliarity with the menu the staff offered no suggestions or guidance. After this initial setback the visit took an even further decline. My family stepped out of line to gather our bearings and a helpful patron overheard we were visitors and directed us to the owner who was seated next to us. I thought this was going to be the saving grace to this trip but he actually made it worse. The gentleman informed the owner we were from out town and he also displayed terrible customer service. He missed out a prime moment to help but he failed. With hunger taking over and Q39 another 14min away minus the 12 min Lyft wait I made an order. Come to find out the food was just as terrible as the service. The cashier/waitress young lady’s attitude was consistently poor, I asked for bbq sauce a hot and normal and you’d swear I’d asked for her first born. Save your self time, money and taste bud disappointment. This place gets a...
