I’ve heard so much about Hamburger Mary’s that I was delighted that I was finally going to get to experience it yesterday, Saturday, October 5, 2013. My favorite cousin in the entire world raves about this place and since he has impeccable taste I figured I would give it a try.
Our server was initially very attentive but that soon changed. The restaurant wasn’t busy when were seated but yet it took at least 30 minutes for our food to be delivered. Once we received our food the fries weren’t fresh, my mom’s burger was pink in the middle even though she asked for it to be well done and my friend’s cheese wasn’t EVEN melted on his grilled cheese sandwich. I didn’t know it was possible to mess up a grilled cheese sandwich but this cook apparently never made one was a teenager!! We would’ve sent the food back but since we were all famished we just ate it. The server NEVER once came back to see if we needed anything else - we were simply forgotten about. We had to push our plates aside because he never came back to pick them up. We waited for about 10 minutes and still no server and STILL no check. I finally had to get up and go and find another server and ask them to have our server bring us our check!!! WHAT TYPE OF SERVICE IS THAT?!?! There were four of us and the server never asked us if we wanted the check together or separate. He simply assumed that we wanted to have to check together. Again, we were forced to wait longer because the server had to split up the checks. Isn’t generally common protocol for a server to ask the party if they want their check together or separate? No one in the party wanted to leave a tip because the service was BELOW average!! I, unfortunately, felt bad for the server so we did leave him something BUT not what I typically leave. My friend REFUSED to leave him a tip at all. I guess I’m just a tad bit nicer than my friend.
I was utterly disappointed in the food and the service I received yesterday. A restaurant gets one time to impress me and Hamburger Mary’s feel completely short in that regard! I hardly ever go out to eat and when I do I want to be WOWED by the service and the food and I honestly could’ve saved myself the $18.00 I spent and went to McDonald’s and had a...
Read moreHamburger Marys was my first bar I found myself in when I moved to KC. I’ve enjoyed many shows, laughs & drinks with friends. I recently got the courage to come to Hamburger Mary’s to support my friends who are performers. This evening in particular, I found myself on the patio smoking a cigarette. While taking a moment for myself amongst a packed event, I assisted someone who’s (for the sake of labeling, which I am not entirely comfortable doing) otherwise would be titled a bearded-queen. Having been a drag queen in my past I know how important it is to be there for your fellow performers. As I assisted this person a feeling of nostalgia came over me. They thanked me by says “you’re the nicest gay man i’ve ever met” I felt appreciated but compelled to correct them for being misgendered. This was the moment I no longer felt welcome. Following the correction the individual proceeded in poking fun at my reveal. Going on to record me for social media subsequently outing me as genderfluid and mocking me by saying “i’m Gender-fluid”. I walked to my corner where I perched to smoke my cig & continued to listen to this person tell everyone around them of the hilarious video mocking me. Stating over and over again & pointing me out to all of their friends. I sat there. Defeated. I rarely go out because of this very hate that is internalized within the Kansas City community.
I try my best to keep my chin up & let words roll off my back but this person went too far for me. This sort of behavior can no longer be acceptable. I understand this is a business & your main goal is making money. But regardless of how nice the food is or how exciting their events are, this sort of behavior is not the first negative experience i’ve had at this place. I believe if you want to continue to have this free & open environment for your patrons you may want to be a bit more selective or cautious of the people you serve one too many drinks to. A side note, as sober as I was that night, I had a wonderful time regardless of this experience but the group of people mocking me for who I am killed any desire for me to return or recommend to this place to anyone. Such a...
Read moreQuite the experience! Free parking across the street. A reservation is needed and your bill must meet the required amount of $15/per person- (So if there is three of you, paying individually, each bill would have to equal a minimum of $15.. OR if paying together, the bill would need to equal a minimum of $45) which is easily achieved with an entrée AND a drink/appetizer/dessert for each person. 13+ years old to get in. Its a smaller place than I expected it to be, with some tables out of view of the stage. We had a huge pillar in the way, so we had to watch the performer on a TV screen. The performer was funny, but the "oh yeah" moaning- and the frequency of it- was excessive. The service was good. The food came out very hot. Our drinks never got refilled, but we didnt specifically ask for them to be either? We went on a Saturday, when they play bingo for a charity. It was fun, but very very very loud- read lips or sit next to someone you want to chat with, I couldnt hear the person across from me.. If you are there for a birthday or bachelor/Bachelorette party, they give you a free shot. They do a little meet and greet / pictures with the performer at the end. If you go on a bingo night, I suggest getting there earlier, and finish eating before bingo starts at 4pm. They play 10 games, with a small break after seven games. PAY DURING THE BREAK. A book of bingo cards is $10 and you can buy as many books as you want- The more you buy, the better chance you have at winning- but the closer you get to 5:30pm, the faster the numbers get called out, making it a little harder if you have multiple cards. But people won QUICK (sometimes only 5 balls got called) and only one winner per game, so be quick to call it out and even quicker to get to the stage. Overall, it was a fun experience. But if youre someone that doesnt like loud noises, this isnt the place for you. And if you dont like being the center of attention, dont be a winner at bingo :) In the end, the performer did allow pictures to...
