This particular Michy's Chino Boricua (MCB) is located in a strip mall a few miles up the road from I10, making it accessible to people like me who are traveling through Houston. The restaurant is well-marked, and in the corner suite, so you shouldn't have trouble finding it. Parking is shared amongst other retailers in the shopping center, but I was able to find a spot quickly. They also have a drive-through if you don't feel like leaving the car. As you enter the door, the signage states, "No pets except service animals." It stood out to me for some reason, and I'd later find out why. I walked in around 11:30 and didn't receive a greeting from the lady at the counter. She answered a phone call and left for the kitchen/back area without acknowledging me. The other young lady behind a wall behind the counter peeked around, saw me, and took my order. She wasn't rude but not particularly friendly. I ordered the pepper steak with fried rice and a side of tostones (twice-fried green plantains). I wasn't aware that the pepper steak came with french fries, so that was a nice surprise. I loooooooathe restaurants that swing that tablet around requesting a tip when you have to go to the counter to order, get your own drinks, and return to the counter to pick up your order. That's essentially a McDonald's or a Whataburger, which doesn't warrant tipping. Add to that the icy greeting (or lack thereof), and it was almost laughable that they were asking for tips. After a visit to the restroom (clean), I sat down to wash my hands and waited about 15 minutes for my food. The pepper steak was tender and flavorful but not the best I've ever had. In fairness, I'm from NYC, so my opinion is biased. The fried rice with the pepper steak was missing the iceberg lettuce that PR fried rice is known for. It wasn't on par with authentic PR fried rice (or even NYC PR Chino fried rice), but it was tasty. The french fries were crisp on the outside and tender inside. When I dipped them in the mayoketchu (mayonnaise and ketchup dip), it was addicting. The tostones were delicious and perfectly garlicky. While waiting for my food and eating it, I watched a guy walk his pug into the restaurant. Of course, the pug was wearing a "service dog" harness. When the rest of his family entered, one carried a pet carrier with another dog in it. There's no way the dog in the carrier was a service animal. It was yipping throughout the time I was sitting there. What's worse is that, despite the signage, none of the employees said anything to them about bringing TWO dogs into the restaurant. I'm a dog owner and lover, and forcing others to eat around my dog in an enclosed area is rude. The rest of the customers who stared open-mouth at the barking dog looked like they agreed, but management said and did nothing. I'm not a fan of owners who look the other way regarding unhygienic practices, and allowing multiple dogs in a restaurant is one of those things that turns me off from a place. I get that the patrons should have respect, but why put up signs if you have no intention or will to...
Read moreThe food was great and the prices were modest. My wife had the garlic chicken with tostones and she loved it. I had the pork BBQ ribs with rice which I found to be good, but not great. The pork was a bit on the dry side for my liking, but my Puertorican wife loves it that way. The restaurant is nice and the there is plenty of staff working the counter and kitchen. However, the staff looked totally beat at 5pm when we visited. Our order took about 30 minutes, which was way too long as we were standing there waiting for it. Worst off was the indoor temperature which made the wait seem eternal. The large thermostat read 82° when it was 85° outside. They do not have any fans so there was no breeze or air circulation making it for a very uncomfortable wait. I imagine this is why the employees looked tired and miserable. One of the male employees was sweating so bad the back of his shirt was wet and sweat stained. I asked if the air conditioner was broken and I was told that it was not, but it was hot due to the large customer presence by the young man that looked like he was about to pass out; the place was only about 1/3 full.
I understand that costs are something a new business has to be very conscious about, however, customer comfort should not be sacrificed nor should their employee's wellbeing.
I suggest lowering the thermostat to about 75°, this is Texas and people walk in expecting to cool off while they enjoy their meal. You can easily fit 6-9 energy efficient ceiling fans between the rows of lights which will improve air circulation and reduce cooling costs.
Michelle, I wish nothing but the best for your restaurant and hope to visit more often. Please take note as I have heard from multiple people that orders take way too long and the restaurant is uncomfortable to sit in. My wife and I personally could not sit there and eat, it's just too hot.
The 4 star rating is mostly due to the restaurant indoor temperature, and a little to the long wait, which I would have not minded as much if the place was nice and cool.
I do recommend the food at this place, but for now I suggest calling it in and taking it to go or having it delivered. I hope this...
Read moreThis place was on my list of places to try in the Katy area so I stopped in on a Friday night. I was pleased there was a drive thru because it was raining out. Service at the drive thru was quick as someone quickly took my order when I arrived and I received my food within a short wait. But the person taking the order really wasn't able to explain what my options were, other than telling me if I didn't want fries I would just get more rice.
I ordered an egg roll, a piece of fried chicken, and the enchilado shrimp. I will say that I was disappointed in the portion sizes for the meal given the price. What you get is a small portion of your protein and tons of their fried rice and fries. (And I did eat a couple of shrimp and have some rice before I took the picture. So I was given about 6 shrimps and they are a great size. But do you see all the rice that was left?! I basically just took from the top because it was excess. All that rice and then a side of fries is why we are overweight in America. 🤣)
I will say that I absolutely loved the flavors of the shrimp! I like things spicy and this opened my nasal passages so I loved it. It definitely would have been nice to have had a larger portion that included more onions, bell peppers, and carrots. And a few more shrimp wouldn't have hurt.
The fried rice is delicious as well. I appreciate that it isn't just plain fried rice but their pork fried rice.
The fried chicken was fried golden brown and was seasoned but I wouldn't say well seasoned. But the taste was decent and the crunch was perfect.
The egg roll was just an egg roll. It wasn't anything that made me say I have to have an egg roll if I visit again.
Again, I loved the taste of my shrimp but I wouldn't visit again and that is simply because of the portion size. For the price, I can visit my favorite asian restaurants in the area and get full size entree with a side of rice. It won't be Michey's rice but I'm not a fan of tons of rice anyway. Michey's meals seem more like the rice is the entree and your protein is the side dish.
Change your portion sizes and I'd...
