Wow it’s still happening! I had my mother in this place 9 years ago this coming August! Let me tell you she had lung, liver Cancer that spread to her Pancreas. She was in so much pain just to touch her was extremely bad.
The hospital that she was in had a caseworker come out from Solera that she recommended this place for her to be cared for. We lived right down the street from Solera at the time and thought it would be a good place for her right after we visited the facility. Let me tell you looks are Very deceiving!
Mom was transfer there from the hospital on a Thursday. The first day that she was there, they had every kind of nurse and staff in her room to reinsure us that my mother was in great hands with them. They began to send in a dietitian to come and assess her food needs due to she had a hard time of swallowing her food. So they put her on a parade diet.
The next morning we came to visit my mom they had her to sit up in the chair next to her bed! They had ruffed her up so bad Not caring how much she pain she was in! She looked horrible and was so dehydrated looking. So I immediately press the call button for the nurses to come so I can get some water for her. Ha it took them two hours before they came! I told them never mind someone showed me where I could fill her pitcher up with water!
I noticed that many patients were using their call button and the loud noise from it rang for hours! I stayed and gave my mom a bed bath in her bed so she could feel somewhat better. I learned this from when she was in the hospital because some CNA’s didn’t read her chart! So I didn’t want my mom to be in more severe pain from the ruffed up of care.
The one of the most disturbing to me was, I couldn’t sleep over only because there was no couch in the room for me to sleep there. So I left very late each day so I could caught some sleep.
The next morning we return and there was a male nurse was in the room. We noticed right away she was gasping for air. Then we saw her portable oxygen tank the plastic tube had been taken off the machine. So we asked the male nurse, how did this tube come off her machine! He said to us it’s here I will tighten it better so she can get some air! So I was extremely upset and went to look for his Supervisor and with No luck she wasn’t on duty!
So on my way back I got turned around and I saw an elderly lady in her wheel chair right out side her door. She Was Begging and crying for Someone to come and help her to the restroom. I ran to the nearest nurses station and asked could she have a nurse to come and help her to the bathroom. This nurse looked at me mean and said her nurse who is assigned to her in the unit Will come and help her! Let me tell you, the look on that nurses face was like a demon! She looked at me like can’t you see I’m working! NO COMPASSION towards that patient situation at ALL! Once again I knew then I had made the worse decision by bring my mother to this Solera facility!
I could go on and on! My mother was bright there on Thursday afternoon and rushed to the hospital early Sunday morning they called and told us to go the hospital immediately because she had to be rushed there! When we got there the paramedics were transporting her off their stretcher on to the hospital bed in the emergency room.
My mother had an oxygen mask on her face and was desperately trying to say tell us something, but we couldn’t take the mask off her face Only because my mother Needed it! So she continued and was on her death bed grasping for air raising up until she had no more strength! I’m standing there crying and devastated, then the doctor came in the room to say her bloodwork and all her vitals were gone and for us to say our last goodbyes and they would start the countdown. I stayed with my mom until her last Breath and my life has Never been the Same! 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔 I’m sharing my story only to tell you if you have a love one you truly care about DO NOT TRUST THIS...
Read moreTerrible management that allows their employees to mistreat the patients. The staff is rude and condescending . Will not look at you during follow up meetings while discussing your loved one. They play on their phones and answer emails and text while you are speaking. Solar does not keep families informed of their loved one’s progress as they promise during sign up, and any attempt to contact them regarding the progress goes unanswered. Very difficult to get in touch with management and or staff members. Meetings are set up then are canceled by director of the facility at the last minute to add to families’ frustration. On our mothers first night at Solara, she pushed the call button to call staff as she had to use the restroom, no one showed up so she spent the entire night in wet and soiled bed linens and nightgown. Was not change until morning. They do not answer calls buttons. Usually 2 hour waits if they answer at all. Our mother had her feeding tube roughly pulled out by a nurse’s aide while attempting to change her sheets. She was not fed for an entire 24 hours due to the feeding tube not in place. Was finally replaced by nurse which was not qualified to do so. A doctor or nurse practitioner was never called. Patients are treated roughly; our mother has black and blue marks on her arms from nursing assistants mishandling her and being rough. An hour of physical therapy is promised however, the patients only receives 20 minutes. Once the patients are wheeled in to therapy, the physical therapists walk way only to chat with co-workers or get on their phones, only to return when it’s time to wheel the patient back into the room. Solara has no set schedule for speech, physical therapy, or any nursing duties, so many times they all show up at the same time. They promise to come back but never do. Our mother was skipped for her bath on multiple occasion due to overlap in duties and didn’t receive a bath for an entire week as speech therapy was in her room when the nurse aid showed up for her bath. A promise to return but did not. This happen quite frequently and she had missed both speech and physical therapy do to no set schedule which Solara informs us, “set times don’t work for us” …so basically, they just wing it and if the therapy over laps with a bath, oh well so be it. She won’t get one that week. Theft in the rooms are also a problem here. I have purchased multiple puffs tissues for our mother and they constantly disappear. You must write the name of the patient as well as room number to have any chance of retaining personal items. How the state allows this facility to stay open is a mystery to me. They do not care about their patients’ only how long they can keep them in the facility and take advantage of the insurance companies. They do not want your loved one to get better and stronger, their goal is to keep them at the facility as long as they can. The state should investigate and shut them down immediately. I plan to file an official complaint with the state as how they treat the elderly; this should not continue. They are abusive to their patients. If you care about your loved one do not bring them to Solara, if you do you will have the fight of your life on your hands as the simply do not care. Do not be fooled by the slick and polished administrator who gives the tours, its all smoke and mirrors. The truth will begin once they have your loved one inside those four walls. Everything from then on will be a complete struggle. Update: Mother had dislocated shoulder from staff...
Read moreMy 74 year old mother was in the hospital for a few weeks battling Covid and pneumonia. She was weak and unable to go home. Her insurance company recommend several rehab centers and after much research I chose to send her to Solera West Houston.
I was nervous and unsure because I’ve heard so many horror stories about these facilities. I am pleased to say that I’m so happy that I made the decision to send her to Solera. Her room is like being in a mini apartment, the cleaning staff does a fantastic job of making sure the rooms are tidy and cleaned daily. Her nurses whom I know all by name have become an extension of my family. The have cared for mom as though she was one of their loved ones.
Mom was so dependent upon them for everything from bathing, changing her, feedings etc. I respect the staff for the awesome job that they do. I’ve watched them nurse mom back to health and she’s almost ready to be released. What they do isn’t easy and a lot is required of them. I must say that the CNA’s, nurses, medicine dispensers, PT & OT have done a remarkable job and they have my utmost respect.
Mom has a great care team who includes Khala her primary M-F nurse, James & Tonya her weekend nurses, all of her CNA’s who are Grace, Pee-Wee, Tasha, UK and Braylyn. Dr. Christine & Zioha would come through weekly and check to see how mom was progressing. They both have such wonderful bedside manner.. They are so attentive and addressed all my concerns about mom’s health and recovery. I like them so well that I think we would be friends outside of the rehab facility. I just can’t say enough wonderful things about them. They all have gone above and beyond by providing excellent care with keeping mom clean, changed, fed and attending to her medical needs.
The PT & OT staff are phenomenal with stopping by daily to help mom with exercise to help her regain her strength. She worked quite often with Ken, Kadrean and Yasmine. They are so patient and gentle with their approach to moms rehab care. Let’s not forget Rosie Yarborough and her team. She’s manages the crew that keeps the facility fresh and clean. She and her team have really impressed with how well they manage to keep moms room and the facility as a whole clean and fresh.
The facility reminds me of being in a resort because, they have a beautiful library, computers, living room areas for large family gatherings, a wonderful peaceful sanctuary, kitchen/cafe areas and tons of activities. Lastly the band played yesterday, which was wonderful. It was so funny watching some of the residents relive their youth, they were truly getting down and having a good time. You won’t be sorry by making the choice to send your loved one to Solera West Houston....
