Old Katy as we like to call it, still in all the right ways operates like as small town. I found myself on errands this morning in need of both a break, and breakfast. Being on Highway 90 I naturally pulled into Snappy’s. If this were the 50’s Snappy’s could not be a more accurate example of a typical 1950’s diner. What’s not typical about Snappy’s is the food !
The door swung open and I was greeted like an old friend before I barely got close. On this visit I chose the two eggs with chicken fried steak and gravy. Looking around waiting for my food, I saw a lively, friendly vibe everywhere. This place is Cheers if Cheers were a diner. The sign at the register stand warns all to “Be Nice or Leave.” .. . I even saw out of towners being treated long time regulars. Apparently Snappy’s only knows one kind of customer service. At this place the customer isn’t king, he’s your best friend !
About this time (which wasn’t long) my waitress showed up with my food. How she got it to the table without a forklift puzzles me. Working around the plate, The biscuit had an amazing buttery flavor without ever knowing a knife. The eggs were cooked exactly as ordered. The chicken fried steak had a very satisfying crunch even after it sat there a bit as I sampled the rest. The cream gravy was every bit the warm, thick creamy classic we all look for and was well seasoned. The home fries born of red potatoes were crisp on the outside with an outstanding balance of sugars and starches inside. Everything was heated through so that it did not cool off before you were done eating, which is always a plus with me. Everything had a fresh quality mouth feel that showed attention to detail even at the end of the breakfast rush. I found...
Read moreI'll start with the positives. The food is absolutely amazing. I've been here twice now and both times the food was great. Now, on to the negatives. My grandma and I came here last Tues or Wed for brunch. Our server was okay, not as friendly as the one I had the previous time. This first issue I had was when my food came out, there was a huge egg shell in my eggs. Luckily, it was only in one small area if the eggs, so I was still able to eat around it. A majority of the customers are elderly so having a cook not pay attention to what he/she is doing is a bit concerning. The other issue I had was when we were checking out, my grandma wanted to pay. The guy asked her if she wanted to include a tip. She said no, b/c we had already left cash on the table. The guy said okay, and then after my grandma signed, he flipped the screen towards him. We wrote thinking he was going to complete the process. We got in the car and she looked at the receipt and noticed he added a $7.65 tip onto the purchase. I wanted to go back in and have him correct it, but my grandma said, no it's okay. Hopefully it goes to the server. Overall, while I did enjoy the food, I will not be back. Eggshells in food and staff that take advantage of non regular elderly customers isn't my jam. If you want to try it, I recommend double checking your eggs, and making sure if you're with someone elderly, finish the checkout...
Read moreMy daughter and I were barely acknowledged when we walked in today. The place was packed. So we figured no biggie, they're busy. A couple of minutes later, 3 Caucasian men walked in and received the royal treatment from the man at the register (slim older man) I thought he was going to pull out a red carpet for them. He was about to offer them a table when he noticed we were standing in front of the 3 men. Then he apologetically told the men they would be sat as soon as possible. He mumbled a "how are you this morning" to me, which I refused to answer to. All was going better until one of the Caucasian waitresses offered my daughter more coffee in Spanish. My daughter answered in English, "no thanks I'm having hot cocoa." One of the reviews I came across was that if you don't look like a white rancher wearing a baseball cap and driving a pick up truck, you don't receive the same nice treatment those folk do. I get it, it's a place where the locals eat but being Greek immigrants you'd expect them to treat non-Caucasians with the same respect any human being deserves. I was reminded today in the worst way why I've been to this place 2 or 3 times in the last 10 years. I think the previous 2 times I just went to support them after Harvey's aftermath....
